Meta Quest’s Home Will Finally be Social in v41 Update

Quest might finally get a social feature worth shouting about.

You’d expect social experiences to be at the forefront of Meta’s virtual reality (VR) drive but one thing that’s always been missing is the ability to directly hang out in the home environment. During Connect in 2021 Meta announced Horizon Home – rather than Oculus Home – which would eventually add that social aspect. That’s going to arrive in the Quest’s v41 update which CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated today.

With Horizon Home, the whole premise is that rather than having to use a separate app to convene with friends in VR or just use voice through the party feature Quest users will be able to gather in one environment and see each other’s avatar. From there they’ll be able to jump into a game or app, making the whole experience far more seamless.

To showcase the update today Zuckerberg invited climber Alex Honnold where they watched his 360-degree film The Soloist. This is a heart-pounding, death-defying ascent up the Dolomite mountains, free climbing up sheer rock faces.

“Met up with legendary climber Alex Honnold in the new Horizon Home — launching with Quest v41 update to bring social presence into your virtual home as soon as you put on your headset,” Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post. “Invite friends to hang out, watch videos together, or jump into apps right from your virtual home. More options to customize your home space currently in development. Also, check out Alex’s 360 film The Soloist VR where he takes you 1000 ft up free climbing the Dolomites!”

The announcement hasn’t specified when v41 will arrive but considering Meta rolls these out monthly and v40 landed almost a month ago, Quest users will likely see the feature arrive in the next week or so. As always it’ll be gradual, so you might need to wait until the end of June to test the new social feature out.

v37 firmware is hiding a few goodies

Back in October, Meta announced that it would eventually transition its home environment to ‘Horizon Home’, giving it a fuller set of social features like being able to invite party members to visit, hang out, or launch into VR apps together. It seems we’re getting a step closer to the release of those features, as Quest 2’s recent v37 firmware is hiding a few things.

Developer Luboš V released a video showing off some of the hidden features that lurk within v37 of the Quest firmware.

Apparently itinerant firmware sleuth ‘Basti564’ also had a part in uncovering the hidden features, who is known for leaking images and models of Project Cambria, the company’s in-development mixed reality headset, and for having uncovered videos of the Quest 2’s Space Sense room guardian in action before its official launch.

The v37 update is now available on the Public Test Channel for Quest 2, however the features seen above aren’t accessible. In the video we get a glimpse at:

The revelation of these hidden features comes on the heels of an interview with Digiday where Meta’s VP of Horizon, Vivek Sharma, hinted that the company hopes to eventually bring all of its social VR apps social VR apps—Horizon Worlds, Horizon Venues, and Horizon Workroom—together in a more seamless way.

There’s no telling how soon we’ll see any of that stuff though. Closer integration with its Horizon social apps, representing a substantial overhaul, certainly sounds like one of those flashy monolithic updates Meta typically reserves for events.

Meta previously said it was hosting a Gaming Showcase in early 2022, although it’s not certain when that’s taking place. Last year’s was in April, although GDC 2022 in March may be a better bet. In any case, we’ll have our eyes peeled on the Oculus blog in the meantime.

How To Watch Disney+, Prime Video & Netflix On Oculus Quest 2

Interested in watching streaming services like Disney+, Netflix and more on Oculus Quest? Here’s our guide to what’s available and the best way to do it.

We also have a whole guide on how to watch TV shows and movies on Oculus Quest — that guide is more focused on all the different services and apps, not just streaming services, that let you watch movies and TV shows, both paid and free, using apps like Bigscreen and YouTube VR. Check that for other options if you’ve had you streaming services fill and are looking for something different to watch.

Native Apps vs Oculus Browser

There are two ways to use streaming services on Oculus Quest. For some streaming services like Netflix, a native app is available — this means you can download a Netflix app from the Oculus Store and watch Netflix in a log cabin environment in VR in the same way as you launch a game when you want to play it.

For some services, it’s possible to use Oculus Browser to log in and stream content through a browser window, just like a PC. This is useful for apps that don’t yet have native Quest apps, such as Disney+. You can even go full screen, to block everything else out of view if you want.

The other advantage of using Oculus Browser is that you can use the Passthrough home environment — allowing you to watch something in a browser window while keeping an eye on your surroundings with the Passthrough view. You can also open multiple tabs, so you could work on something else or browse the internet while watching.

However, not everything works with Oculus Browser — we’ve had mixed results when testing streaming services through it.

Netflix on Oculus Quest 2

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services in the world. Luckily, it also has a native app for Oculus Quest.

The Netflix app is available to download for free on the Oculus Store, and places you in a small, cozy cabin with a large screen (pictured above) that lets you browse and play Netflix content from your region. However, unlike Bigscreen, there’s no way to use the Netflix app to watch with friends or in any kind of social capacity. Plus, the video stream is capped at 480p according to Netflix, so visually the movies won’t not look super crisp.

Unfortunately, Netflix does not work on Oculus Browser, so the native app is your only option.

Disney+ on Oculus Quest 2

Disney+ has not yet launched a native app for any VR headset, let alone the Oculus Quest. As far as we know, there’s been no indication of plans to launch a VR app either.

However, Disney+ does work with Oculus Browser, as pictured above — just open up a new tab and log in to Disney+ like you would on a computer. Everything should go smoothly and you’ll be streaming shows in no time.

Prime Video on Oculus Quest 2

Amazon Prime Video does have a native app for Oculus Quest headsets. Access to Prime Video is included with Amazon Prime, so just login to your Amazon account and you’re good to go. You can play movies and TV shows included with Prime, and watch them in a virtual movie theatre. There’s also a small selection of VR movie content as well.

Prime Video also works in Oculus Browser, but with the restriction of only streaming in standard definition. If you want to watch Prime Video while in Passthrough mode or with other tabs open, then this should work great.

Hulu, Peacock and other streaming services

Other popular streaming services like Hulu and Peacock don’t currently offer native Quest apps. We haven’t been able to try all services in Oculus Browser, but you can log in to any streaming service yourself and see if it works — so far, we’ve found Netflix to be the only one that doesn’t.

Quest v30 Update Bringing Multitasking & Mic Switching, Air Link to Original Quest

Today Oculus is starting to roll out the v30 update to Quest headsets, which brings multitasking, mic switching, and new accessibility options. The update also adds the wireless PC VR streaming feature, Air Link, to the original Quest.

Oculus announced the v30 update today, the latest in a series of patches which have aggressively improved the standalone Quest headset.

As with prior updates, v30 will roll out slowly to Quest and Quest 2 users, likely over the course of a week or more, but you can check for an update manually to see if it’s available to you. Here’s how:

How to Update Quest and Quest 2

In your headset, bring up the Quest menu by pressing the Oculus button on your right controller. Find the Settings section (gear icon).
On the left of the Settings section select ‘About’ at the bottom of the list
Look next to the ‘Software Update’ label to see if a new version is available
If no new version is available, try restarting your headset and checking again

App Multitasking on Quest

In an effort to make Quest more useful for productivity, Oculus is adding a multitasking feature for 2D apps.

Similar to the Oculus browser, users can have up to three ‘screens’ in front of them, each with different 2D apps. While the selection of 2D apps on Quest is limited to a handful of Oculus-specific apps like Explore, Store, Oculus TV, Scoreboards, and others, this multitasking functionality would be even more useful if Oculus ever opens up the headset to 2D Android apps.

Once the multitasking feature reaches your headset, for now you’ll find it under the Experimental Features section of the Settings panel. Once enabled, you can drag-and-drop 2D apps to open them side-by-side.

Mic Switching Between Party & App Chat

The v30 update to Quest will give you more control over your mic, allowing you to switch between party chat and app chat.

As it stands right now, if you’re in a system-level Oculus party chat with friends, you won’t be able to communicate with players inside of a game which uses its own in-game voice-chat. The only way to do so is to drop out of your party.

v30 will make it easy to switch back and forth between party chat and app chat without leaving and rejoining the party. This will also make it easier for players joining the same app to transition from party chat to app chat (to take advantage of spatial voice audio, for instance).

Air Link Comes to Oculus Quest

Air Link is a wireless version of the Oculus Link feature which lets you plug your Quest headset into a capable computer to play PC VR games. The feature first debuted in the v28 update, but it was restricted to Quest 2. v30 now brings Air Link to the original Oculus Quest as well.

The feature is still experimental and takes quite a few steps to enable; check out our full Air Link setup guide here, including tips on the ideal networking setup to ensure maximum performance.

Color-blind & Height Accessibility Options

The v30 Quest update is also adding accessibility options, and gathering them in a new Accessibility section in the Settings panel.

In addition to the existing ability to change text size, v30 adds system-wide color-blind options to help people with Deuteranomaly (green-red), Protanomaly (red-green), and Tritanomaly (blue-yellow) color-blindness.

v30 also introduces a ‘Raise View’ feature (which will be in Experimental Features when available), which allows you to raise your viewing height by 16 inches (0.4 meters). The idea is to allow games to be played at a standing height even when players are seated. Oculus says the function can be disabled by applications (likely to prevent unintended gameplay where height is concerned).

‘Hand Physics Lab’ Review – Putting the Fun in Frustration

Hand Physics Lab is all about hand-tracking, and this over 80-level game aims to throw you head first into a whimsical series of seemingly simple tasks. Quest can offer mixed results when it comes to hand-tracking fidelity though, so if you’re not careful, it can be extremely frustrating for all the wrong reasons.

Gameplay

Messing around with hand-tracking is really fun the first couple times you try it, and seeing my twiddling fingers represented in VR really served up some of the first ‘wow’ moments for me. Despite the promise of controller-less interactions, hand-tracking on Quest hasn’t been adopted by game developers across the board for a few reasons, a major one being that it offers lower fidelity input in comparison to Touch.

Note: If you haven’t given hand-tracking a spin on either Quest headset, you just need regular indoor lighting for optimal results. I found closing my shades and turning on all my interior lights provided adequate tracking. Still, it’s not uncommon to see your virtual hands completely wig out, or not track all of your fingers correctly—it just doesn’t feature the rock-solid tracking and button inputs of Touch.

Because Hand Physics Lab has virtualized your hands into physics-based objects, it’s less about directly interacting with objects and more about carefully miming actions and piloting a pair of decidedly much less capable limbs. It feels a bit like playing Surgeon Simulator at times, except the fidelity of input is constantly changing. It’s hard to predict when hand-tracking will fail and that lightbulb you tried to screw in for the past five minutes gets launched into the stratosphere.

Hand-tracking funkiness is an Oculus problem, but Hand Physics Lab seems to be leaning into it with mixed results. Even in the best case, this is the level of jitter you should expect. Ok, so maybe it’s comically difficult by design because the hand-tracking control scheme isn’t precise. Hand Physics Lab also offers Touch controls, but that feels a bit like cheating because it lowers the skill ceiling so low that it’s not really even worth playing at that point. The creator assumes you’ll want to play with hand-tracking, so I did.

And like Surgeon Simulator, it definitely results in some madcap things like getting your virtual arm stuck in a tube while your physical hand moves through space unimpeded. When it’s working well enough it can be really fun, but when you’re not sure why hand-tracking is failing and it just does, playing the game can feel like trying to punch someone in your dreams. Totally ineffectual for no discernible reason.

In Hand Physics Lab you run through about 80 tasks, most of which are regular things even chimps are expected to be able to do: Press these buttons. Sort these colored blocks. Stack these colored blocks. Paint these eggs different colors. And although only some that can be considered puzzles as such, there are a few really interesting tasks in the bunch that take some patience and attention to accomplish, like having to snatch target blocks out of a tumble dryer, or using a sort of grip-based telepathy to guide blocks through a series of tubes.

After completing the final sequential task, I was pretty much done with Hand Physics Lab though. Its more of a quirky, bright smorgasbord of tech demo stuff than a full-featured game as such. I say that full-well knowing that there’s actually a fair bit of content here; you play sequential levels to earn stars in order to unlock sandbox activities.

Putting hand funkiness aside, I wished offered bigger and better puzzles. There was a glimmer of some really interesting tasks that very briefly ramped up to real puzzle territory, and I would have loved to see those teased out more.

Immersion

At risk of repeating myself, I’ll put it this way: hand-tracking funkiness really inhibits the promise of this game. If hand-tracking on Quest were hypothetically rock solid, and this game intentionally made it tremble and wig out for comedic effect, you might appraise it differently.

Anyway, I typically would play around 10 minutes at a time, but after playing for an hour straight, I got extremely frustrated with the game (read: ~~I rage quit~~ I tactically regrouped) and I had to write down my immediate impressions:

I feel like I have a wasting disease writing this. I just played Hand Physics Lab for an hour straight, and now my hands feel like weak meat puppets.
I’m having to concentrate very hard to coordinate my hands to type this correctly, and my arms feel extra heavy and useless.

The game had screwed with my proprioception, or the sense that you know where your limbs are at any given time without looking at them. More accurately, I was actually experiencing a ‘body transfer illusion’, which can be replicated by hiding a person’s hand from sight and replacing it with a fake one. Stroking both the fake hand and the subject’s real hand with a feather actually creates something called ‘proprioceptive drift’, which essentially makes the person feel like the rubber hand is their actual hand.

Because I was so intently staring at my virtualized hands the entire time, which don’t move perfectly in concert with my physical hands, I had actually internalized that my hands had become less effective at fine coordination tasks like typing or picking things up afterwards when I left the headset. Revisiting the game for shorter periods made this less apparent, but it’s safe to say I won’t be playing for extended sessions anytime soon. I took a break after that, and my arms eventually felt normal again, which was a relief.

Smaller bites and slower, more intentional movement can lessen this, but just don’t go in expecting to interact normally.

Comfort

Hand Physics Lab can be played seated, standing, and allows for a variable amount space. Besides the intensely weird body illusion stuff, it ranks among the most comfortable VR experiences since all locomotion is physical and not artificial such as smooth turning, snap-turning, or teleporting.

Could the latest VR workout game for Oculus Quest put the fun in your at-home fitness routine? Supernatural.

Healthline contributor Nancy Schimelpfening strapped on a VR headset and tried the new fitness game “Supernatural” to find out if it’s a worthy workout that’s worth the price.

When I saw the ads for “Supernatural” on Facebook, I was intrigued.

I have been using the Oculus Rift, and later the Oculus Quest, for a few years now.

In particular, I really enjoy games like “Beat Saber,” which have allowed me to remain active at home during the pandemic.

However, while these games are fun, I’ve never felt that they really lived up to the potential that VR fitness has. For example, while “Beat Saber” does use the 360-degree rotation that is available with the Quest, there are only limited levels where it is used.

Would “Supernatural” do a better job? And would it be worth the relatively hefty price of admission?

Since they were offering a free trial membership for the first 30 days, I decided to check it out.

What is ‘Supernatural’?

Imagine opening your eyes and finding yourself standing on the Great Wall of China (or one of the many other scenic locations that are featured in the game).

However, before you can fully process the fantastic vista that surrounds you, pairs of black and white targets begin to float toward you.

An exercise coach speaks in your ear, encouraging you to swing at them with the corresponding black and white bats that you hold in your hands.

A rousing sound track consisting of musical hits that you know and love plays in the background.

Soon, you are sweating and breathing hard as you spin around 360 degrees, squatting and swinging in time with the music.

This is the VR fitness game “Supernatural.”

‘Supernatural’ vs. ‘Beat Saber’

No review of “Supernatural” is going to be complete without comparing it to what is arguably the reigning king of VR fitness games: “Beat Saber.”

How they are similar

“Supernatural” is most often compared to “Beat Saber” because they share many of the same mechanics:

– Both involve using objects to strike targets as they come toward you.

– Both provide varying patterns of targets choreographed to music to get you moving your body in different ways.

– Both have you stepping side to side and squatting in order to avoid obstacles.

– Both allow you to rotate 360 degrees in space.

– This is where the similarities end, however.

How they are different

While there are many similarities between “Supernatural” and “Beat Saber,” it’s easy to see how they differ when we break down some of their individual features and compare them head to head.

The music

When you buy the basic “Beat Saber” game, you receive a limited sound track of electronic music. They are all very catchy and I did come to love them; however, none of them were music that I had previously heard, which initially took away from my enjoyment of the game.

Unfortunately, the limited number of songs gets boring pretty quickly. The developers do periodically release new music expansion packs, featuring artists like Imagine Dragons and BTS. However, each pack comes at an additional cost. Also, there’s no guarantee I’ll even be interested in the featured artist.

“Supernatural” is very different though.

It features top hits from today and past decades. Most are songs that are very familiar to me, and even the ones that aren’t are ones that I enjoy right away. I think that’s to be expected when the list is curated based on what’s popular.

So far, as I finish up my 30-day trial, I have not repeated any music. I’m not sure how large their selection is at this point, but it’s obviously large enough to keep things fresh.

The great selection of music that they provide is a part of why it’s more expensive, but it fixes two big complaints that I had with “Beat Saber”: stale music and music that I didn’t necessarily like.

The moves

There’s so much to say about how “Supernatural” gets you moving in better and different ways from “Beat Saber.”

One big contrast is that you are able to make better use of the fact that you can turn 360 degrees.

When “Beat Saber” first came out, it was designed to work best with the Oculus Rift. So, for the most part, it’s played facing forward. While they have added 360-degree movement to some levels, it’s mainly been added to the more difficult ones. If you haven’t yet mastered those, you are out of luck.

“Supernatural,” on the other hand, makes full use of your ability to rotate in every single workout.

Another really great way that it allows you to move is there are a lot more squats, lunges, and twisting motions in its workouts than are found in “Beat Saber.”

Basically, where “Beat Saber” seems to concentrate more on creating complex patterns that you master through repetition, Supernatural is more about getting you moving in ways that enhance your strength and fitness.

With “Supernatural” I find myself working up a sweat and feeling stronger over time. This did not happen when I was playing “Beat Saber.”

The motivation

One thing that “Supernatural” has that really adds value is its use of real trainers to lead each workout.

In a time when going out to an exercise class isn’t always possible due to concerns about COVID-19, this is a real bonus.

During my workouts, I have found myself pushing just a little bit harder or feeling just a little bit stronger because of something that the trainer was saying.

Even though I know it’s not a live class, the fact that it’s VR gives it that feel of being there with a real trainer.

I find myself looking forward to working out with the trainers that I like the best, almost as if they are really visiting my home.

This feel of being there with a person to guide and encourage you is entirely missing from “Beat Saber.”

Another great motivator is their use of beautiful background scenery.

Each song is set to a different 360-degree backdrop of a location somewhere around the world, for example, the Great Pyramid of Giza or the moais of Easter Island.

From your position on a platform floating above the scene, you can turn in every direction to view your breathtaking location.

Really, my only complaint about this feature is that I don’t have quite enough time to look around in awe before the next portion of the workout begins.

One additional feature that I found motivating was the way the game can be linked to my Apple Watch and a smart phone app to monitor my heart rate and other in-game statistics. Being able to see and compare these numbers gives me feedback that keeps me wanting to do better each time.

The cost

“Supernatural” and “Beat Saber” also differ quite a bit in price, which may be a sticking point for many people.

The basic version of “Beat Saber” is a one-time $29.99 fee, with the optional music expansion packs ranging in cost from $6.99 to $14.99 and individual songs costing $1.99.

“Supernatural,” on the other hand, is a subscription-based service that will set you back $19 per month. However, you can get a reduced price of just under $15 per month if you opt for an annual subscription at $179.

Is ‘Supernatural’ worth the monthly fee?

When I first started the free trial, I wanted to not like it. For the cost of the annual membership, I could probably purchase a basic membership at one of the big box gyms. Or I could simply keep using “Beat Saber,” which I already owned.

However, I have to admit that I am now hooked. I find myself looking forward to working out in a way I never did before. It doesn’t feel like a chore.

When I’m moving along with the music and soaking up the gorgeous scenery, I feel powerful, motivated, and open to new possibilities.

It’s something about the visual and auditory beauty combined with the illusion of being there with a friendly, energetic trainer that just makes me feel good about putting on my headset and becoming immersed in that world.

I feel like the use of real trainers and the availability of new music and workouts each day adds value to the membership that can’t be found in “Beat Saber.”

Finally, it helps knowing that I don’t have to worry about COVID-19 or any other germs that might be lurking in a gym.

I have decided that, for me, it is absolutely worth it.

I would recommend that anyone who is interested in VR fitness should at least give it a test. With the free 30-day trial, you really can’t go wrong.

If you like “Beat Saber,” you’ll probably love “Supernatural.”

For an additional challenge, you can engage your abs for a solid upper-body workout that will leave your muscles aching.

REAKT PERFORMANCE TRAINER

Oculus ‘First Steps’ Now Works With Quest Hand-Tracking

‘First Steps With Hand Tracking’ and ‘Tiny Castle’ are available now via the Oculus App Lab.

It was back in 2019 that Facebook first began rolling out support for hand tracking on the Oculus Quest. Using the headsets’ built-in cameras, players could for the first time ditch the Touch controllers and interact with VR content using their bare hands.

Since its release, however, we’ve seen little use of the feature beyond a few minor tech demos designed to showcase potential gameplay mechanics. Several existing titles, such as the VR fantasy magic game Waltz of the Wizards, have experimented with hand tracking support, though we’ve yet to see the technology really take flight on standalone headsets.

Today, Facebook released two free App Lab demos on the Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 designed to show developers the many possibilities afforded by built-in hand-tracking functionality.

A rerelease of the companies original introductory experience, First Steps lets new players get a feel for their VR environment, allowing them to interact with a variety of objects in order to help better acquaint them with the Touch controllers. You can play table tennis, operate a remote control blimp, smack a tetherball around, fondle some cubes, or perform the cha-cha-cha with a robot dance partner.

First Steps With Hand Tracking offers the same experience, only instead of interacting with the in-game world via your Touch controllers, you instead use your own two hands. Trying it out for myself, I found the interactions to be wonky. The tracking quality is hit-or-miss and you often have to close the entirety of your hand in order to pick up certain objects, which can kill the immersion depending on the shape and size of the item. This is an App Lab release, however, so bugs are to be expected.

In addition to First Steps With Hand Tracking, you can also check out Tiny Castles, another free demo for the Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 designed to showcase the capabilities of hand tracking. In this VR puzzle adventure, players take on the role of a powerful god tasked with using their incredible abilities to free their believers and destroy the “obelisk,” thus ridding the world of evil. Along the way, players will need to overcome a variety of unique challenges using their bare hands, from solving complex puzzles and operating ancient machinery to battling a variety of miniature enemies.

“Included is the “Playground” level which is the best place to experience all of the game mechanics in an isolated setting while the actual game levels demonstrate these mechanics in real game scenarios,” states the official game description.

Both First Steps With Hand Tracking and Tiny Castles are available now for free via the App Lab.
