This innovation streamlines the creation of virtual assets and training environments and aligns with Lenovo’s vision of diversifying hardware applications across markets and use cases.

As Jason McGuigan, Head of Commercial Virtual Reality at Lenovo, explained, “The big power of Engage is that it doesn’t require the customer to be an expert. There is a ton of value in sharing this with customers and showcasing what can be done with minimal knowledge, right out of the box.”

“Engage is bringing to the Enterprise XR market the art of the possible, walking people into this new arena with generative AI. People can literally speak content into existence.”

It’s a paradigm shift in learning design, because it no longer requires the developer to scope out all the possible pathways and questions a user might have in advance of deployment, and programme for each eventuality. The dynamic responses of GenAI mean that hyper-personalised learning journeys are created on demand.

Virtual Worlds, Real Learning Applications

“For example, we had a pharmaceutical company demonstration, where they asked Athena to role-play a patient with a specific disease,” Whelan described.

The physician had a 5 or 6-minute conversation with Athena to land on their correct diagnosis, and then Athena rated that conversation, for their knowledge and approach.

“For us to create that in programming would have previously been a three-month project,” he pointed out. “The cost could have easily been $100,000, or $150,000.

“Instead, we did it within 5 minutes.”

The potential impact on the way we learn everything, is hard to imagine. The combination of generative AI in spatial computing, will alter the way we interact with knowledge forever.

“I think the virtual reality, mixed reality, and ‘real’ worlds will keep blending, to serve the user in new and better ways”, Whelan reflected.

“For example, if I am a maintenance guy walking up to a car with my wearable device, I can interrogate the car’s own diagnostics, then use mixed reality to identify the failed part. Or maybe the AI will generate an avatar to walk over and point at the specific component, and show me exactly how to fix it.”

He envisages a future where we can all call up our AI-driven assistant, to enhance our memories, knowledge, and decision-making. “My personal VR overlay will be different to anyone else’s, because of what I need to know about, at the moment I most need to be aware of it.”

ENGAGE Reveals First Look at ‘Link’ Metaverse Platform for Enterprise & Education

ENGAGE, the XR education and enterprise metaverse company, today unveiled its Link social platform which the company calls a “fully featured corporate metaverse.”

Previously codenamed Oasis when it was first revealed in June 2021, the Ireland-based studio calls Link a “professional metaverse,” as it was designed to host persistent virtual worlds which serve as gateways to individual spaces where employees, students and individual users can interact.

The studio published a six-minute first look at Link today, shown below:

In the video, ENGAGE’s Chris Madsen takes us through the basics of the Link platform starting with ‘Central Plaza’, a jumping off point to other worlds and as well as serving as a meetup location for events. Heading through any one of the portals takes you to what the company dubs a ‘Metaworld’, or virtual persistent locations built specifically for individual businesses.

Madsen then shows off two more hubs, ‘Enterprise Plaza’ and ‘Education Plaza’, which respectively organize portals according to business and educational content.

Link also features an ‘Apartment Plaza’, which hosts configurable personal spaces for anyone who joins the platform, available as a sort of Home space not just for enterprise or education-focused users. The user’s virtual penthouse is what Madsen calls “an opportunity to have friends and family over, to socialize, hangout, watch movies and have a great time.” Besides being able to customize the apartment, Madsen shows off a ‘simulation room’ that lets you launch bespoke experiences.

This follows the studio’s €9 million (~$10.7 million) fund raise last year which spurred the creation of Link, which Engage XR said at the time would be pitched as an “opportunity for corporate users to expand their customer base and provide immersive services at a reasonable price.”

An exec from the company discusses latest updates, the Metaverse, and immersive learning opportunities

There are several virtual reality (VR) immersive education and remote collaboration tools available in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with extended reality (XR) solutions such as Spatial, Horizon Workrooms, Glue, and many others seeking to meet the growing demand.

The Waterford, Ireland-based ENGAGE development team is working tirelessly to provide an up to date remote collaboration solution. The platform offers a vast array of learning and communication tools that suit many enterprise-grade or education use cases.

XR Today sat down with David Whelan, Chief Executive Officer at ENGAGE XR Holdings Plc, to discuss the firm’s recent rebranding, its Metaverse goals, and the future of XR in education.

XR Today: How has 2021 been for ENGAGE?

David Whelan: Until four months ago, the public knew ENGAGE as ‘Immersive VR Education’. We were teasing apps like ‘Apollo 11’, ‘Titanic’ and ‘Shuttle Commander.’ I’m Buzz Aldren and then the Apollo 11 experience.

But, ENGAGE was for educational use cases, so, we built the ‘VR classroom’, where you can go in and teach ‘virtually’ to anybody in the world. Anything you could do in a real classroom, you could also do in our virtual classroom.

Additionally, you can bring in 3D models and do all kinds of stuff. Also, we have a spatial recording feature, which is quite unique and robust.

It will not only record everything you do and say, but it can also record everybody in the session, where you could go in and edit it.

On the PC version of ENGAGE, we have a full editor built into the platform, where you can go in and you can add graphical elements or animations and later, publish that all through the platform.

I think, one of the things that I cringe at—and it’s very, very true—is that I have people come to us, clients from other platforms like Spatial and Glue, who say: “ENGAGE has the best features that nobody’s ever heard of.”

People don’t find us that often actually. They normally find Spatial and Glue first, but are looking around for other platforms. We’re normally the second or third platform they find.

We have major clients like 3M and Fidelity. Facebook, now Meta, is a client of ours as well who uses ENGAGE for corporate events, VIP meetings, and other things. They don’t use their platform, which is very telling.

There are things that we try to do that others don’t. We try to support full-body avatars and make them look realistic, whereas a lot of other platforms go for a cartoon or robot style. VR Chat has a huge range of different avatars that you can have, which is fantastic for a younger audience.

ENGAGE also provides enterprise and education use cases, and that space is for a more professional, older crowd. I think propelled our company along because so many corporations now are trying to onboard employees and make them feel included in a company. That makes a big difference in VR.

Also, we’ve had some events like the HTC VIVE conference, [which took place on] ENGAGE twice and firstly in March when lockdowns first happened in Europe, and over 2,000 people attend.

XR Today: What is new in ENGAGE v2.1?

David Whelan: ENGAGE version 2.1 has improved avatars, so, up until version 2.0, if a user was on the Quest or a mobile device, the only person who was a full-body avatar was the host. Everybody else has a ‘mobile version’ of their Avatar, which is a half-body.

In v2.0, we completely changed the avatar system. Now, you can have 10 Full Body avatars, where the first 10 people in the room are full-body and everybody else is a mobile avatar.

Also, v2.1 has a huge amount of security updates for the platform. We are ISO 2701 certified—the only VR platform to have that security certification, which is a big thing for businesses and enterprise users.

When you have a big client such as 3M or even Facebook (Meta), if you want to work with those companies, they will send you a huge security audit.

It’s going to take between three to six months to get through that. So, in about 200 questions, they’ll ask “Have you got a policy for this? What’s your SNA?”

You have to go through that entire process, but when you have ISO certification, it gets rid of a lot of that red tape and you can do business a lot quicker.

What we’re doing is [creating] a framework for these businesses to build their own ‘Metaworlds.’ So, a client comes to us and goes, “these are the routes that I want and this is the use case. I want it only available on my website.” You can now do that.

Alternatively, ENGAGE is an Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud service that links clients together in a wider Metaverse of businesses—a place where enterprises are linked together by portals and bridges.

XR Today: ENGAGE generated roughly $1.4m in revenue over the past year. Who are the most important clients to your revenue stream?

David Whelan: That revenue was just the first six months of this year, and we haven’t reported the numbers yet for the remainder of the year, but we’ve had a strong year.

The majority of our clients are US and German-based, places where remote work is becoming a bigger thing. We also have clients in the UAE in the Middle East, but the vast majority of our revenue client base is coming from [the US] and Germany.

Then the split in our client base is 40 percent education clients and 60 percent enterprise clients, although 70 to 80 per cent of the revenue is coming from these enterprise clients.

So, the education clients pay a lower premium, but it’s still a pretty important factor in what we’re doing. You get less per student, but you might get so many more students in the future.

That was the original goal of the platform. It’s more of a focus on enterprise clients for now because that is where the revenue is coming in.

XR Today: Do you feel like XR academia is coming along? How important is it?

David Whelan: With ENGAGE’s toolsets and spatial recording system, if a student misses a class, they can replay that class all over again as if it’s happening live on the platform.

There’s a lot of benefits for XR as an education tool, even just from the communications’ side. We haven’t even touched on simulated learning, where instead of just watching a video of something, a student is actually in the historical experience.

If you’re doing engineering, you can give the students an engineering kit to build a bridge. They can learn all about the dynamics of how to build a structurally sound bridge. There are a huge amount of benefits.

XR Today: Can you introduce the ENGAGE Oasis business Metaverse and the benefits that it will potentially bring?

David Whelan: What we have with ENGAGE Oasis is the ‘central plaza’ that you can explore, and then there’s going to be a bridge to an Enterprise Plaza, an Education Plaza, or Creative Plaza.

For example, when you get to the Enterprise Plaza, there’s going to be a list of doorways for a user to go into a 3M or HTC Metaverse world to meet representatives from those companies and find out about what they’re doing.

That’s the first step in the evolution of networks. The Metaverse is a location for businesses, where each [one] controls their Metaworlds. We are just providing a framework and a way for people to access those worlds if that’s what the businesses want.

Social VR Platform ‘ENGAGE’ Generated Over $1.4M in Revenue in First Half of 2021

VR Education, the virtual reality software firm behind ENGAGE, has reported a significant uptick in revenue generated by the social VR platform so far this year, with revenue from Engage in 2021 nearly doubling over the same period last year.

The Waterford, Ireland-based company has created a number of bespoke educational experiences over the years alongside its most successful product, Engage, which targets companies using it for things like virtual training, simulation, education, and online events.

Publicly traded companies working on VR are typically very large and diversified to the point where picking apart financials doesn’t always provide meaningful data. An overwhelming majority of companies working in the industry are however privately held, and therefore not obligated to specify their wins (or losses).

But VR Education is a fairly unique case in the industry. As a small to medium-sized company publicly listed on both on Euronext Dublin and London Stock Exchange, it’s not only obligated to give stock holders a peek into the financials, but it also conveniently serves as a strong watermark to see just how things are moving in VR.

In the most recent stock holder update detailing the first half of 2021, the company says Engage nearly doubled its revenue over the same period last year, with unaudited revenue in H1 2021 expect to come in somewhere around €1.25 million (~$1.5 million), an increase of 84% over an H1 2020 revenue of €680,000 (~$800,000). In H1 2021, Engage accounted for 72% of its overall revenue stream, an increase of 39% over the year prior.

To put that into perspective, in 2020 the company reported an annual total revenue across all products at €1.42 million (~$1.68 million). With a global pandemic bottlenecking most in-person business though online communication platforms, it seems VR Education has managed to capitalize.

And the company seems to have a fair bit of runway ahead of it too. In June the company announced it had raised €9 million (~$10.7 million) which will help it launch its Oasis metaverse platform—said to be a “fully featured corporate metaverse” where companies can meet and sell products and services directly to each other.

VR Education now counts more than 100 commercial customers using its Engage platform, including recent additions Abbott Laboratories, KPMG, MongoDB, and the US State Department. HTC, a strategic partner and shareholder of VR Education, has also started selling its ENGAGE-based product, VIVE Sessions, in China via its Vive XR Suite software bundle.

Engage is available across a host of VR devices including SteamVR headsets, Oculus Quest, Vive Focus Plus, and Pico headsets. It also supports mobile devices running iOS and Android, and traditional PC monitors.

As a result, one area of the platform could look drastically different from another depending on the owner.

Im Hauptmenü können Sie ganz einfach Ihren eigenen Raum erstellen, der nicht öffentlich sichtbar ist, aber von anderen Personen über eine Raum-ID verbunden werden kann. Klicken Sie dazu auf die Registerkarte „Sitzung beitreten“, klicken Sie anschließend auf „Sitzung nach ID“ und geben Sie den Raum-ID-Code ein, den Sie erhalten haben. Bis zu 3 Personen können an einem Meeting mit der LITE-Lizenz teilnehmen, 20 mit PRO und bis zu 70 mit der Enterprise-Lizenz.

Treten Sie einem öffentlichen Raum bei

Drittens wählen Sie IFX-Elemente aus einer vorhandenen Bibliothek aus, verschieben und skalieren Sie sie. IFX-Elemente sind dreidimensionale Objekte wie Tiere, Architekturen oder Objekte. Viertens: Herstellen einer Verbindung zu einer Datenbank über das Menü “Medien”. In der unteren Registerkartenauswahl können Sie auf Medien klicken. Neben der Wiedergabe von YouTube-Videos können Sie hier auch Medien laden und eine Verbindung zu einem Cloud-Dienst (OneDrive, Gdrive, Dropbox) herstellen. Dies bedeutet, dass Sie über diese Internetverbindung auch virtuellen Zugriff auf alle Dokumente und Dokumenttypen haben.

Bewegung

In Engage ist es möglich, sich im Raum zu bewegen. Im Menü Engage können Sie auf der Registerkarte VR-Modus den Sitzmodus einstellen oder die vollständige Bewegungsverfolgung aktivieren. Darüber hinaus können Sie sich mit dem Pico-Controller über das Touchpad in einem Raum bewegen oder das Teleportieren nutzen.

Das Menü in der rechten Leiste enthält einige weitere Funktionen, die für Ihr Meeting äußerst nützlich sein können. Sie können das Mikrofon einfach ein- und ausschalten, mit der Kamera Bilder aufnehmen oder das VR-Modus-Menü öffnen. Sie können auch auf die Einstellungen zugreifen und das Meeting von dort aus beenden.

Unser Fazit

Insgesamt ist Engage einfach und problemlos zu bedienen. Meetings können in kürzester Zeit erstellt, geöffnet und verbunden werden. Die Teilnahme erfolgt ebenfalls in wenigen Sekunden. Die Office-Tools bieten eine gute Alternative zu herkömmlichen Besprechungen und stellen keinen wesentlich höheren Aufwand dar. Das VR-Erlebnis ist sehr realitätsnah und lässt Sie schnell vergessen, dass Sie sich in der virtuellen Welt befinden. Insbesondere für den B2B-Sektor und die Möglichkeit, Meetings auf der Pico G2 4k– und Neo-Linie abzuhalten, ist es eine bessere Alternative als Oculus, das aufgrund seiner Facebook-Einschränkungen für den Unternehmenssektor weniger geeignet ist.
