All around the world we’ve heard the value of virtual reality when it comes to health care but no one really knows how to use it properly. Some companies and Healthcare organizations have tried but these cases and value is still Limited.

More testing and collaboration is needed in order to make something that can actually help patients heal faster or help doctors to save lives. That is why it’s in live it we are working with universities from across the world in order to create a network of healthcare organizations and educational institutions that want to see virtual reality used to Aid in patient care.

Recently SimLabIT along with the Karolinska Institute, the University of Leeds, the open knowledge foundation, and the University of Thessaloniki have been awarded a 1M€ Grant from the Erasmus+ program. This project, known as ENTICE, is dedicated to exploring the possibilities of using VR/AR/MR/XR in education for students and staff alike.

Moreover, it will establish a network of universities and hospitals who want to create content and share it with other universities and hospitals across the world. This will allow for virtual reality to become more common as content can be created and tested easily by a larger number of qualified professionals.

In addition to working with partners through the projects, SimLabIT will also be holding events that will promote VR/AR/MR/XR throughout the world. For this we have raised 380.000 Euros in seed funding from existing investors, the Erasmus Foundation, Finland’s ELY center, Spain Government, and established sales office in the city of Alicante, Spain. Our goal is to bring virtual reality to this Global Network and create the revolution in medical education for all.

Lastly, to expand what we’re doing we are reaching out to pharmaceutical and medical device companies that want to help with this revolution of medical education. We have seen much interest from the pharmaceutical industry in this matter as they also would like to produce content to help patients. As we are already working with Airbus Defence & Space and many pharmaceutical companies, we are inviting as many as possible who want to join in to contact us.

Virtual reality has the potential for changing the world for the better. It can help ease pain, prepare for New Life issues and experiences, and create new processes for doctors to follow. It will take a Global Network of researchers working together in order to find the best way to use this new technology for the better. Medical Platform XRHealth Allows Third Party Development

Great strides are being made in the use cases for virtual reality (VR) as a viable medium for certain health treatments. XRHealth (formerly VRHealth) is one company doing just that, announcing this week that its platform is now being opened to third-party developers. One of the first to partner with XRHealth is Healium, a system designed to relieve stress powered by brainwaves and heart rate.

Stress is a major factor for various illnesses and people taking time off work, so Healium has developed a biometrically- controlled solution that is designed to reduce anxiety and stress. Using normal consumer wearables like Fitbit, watches with heart rate monitors built-in or EEG headbands, users are taken through story-driven escapes which they can then control through emotions.

Healium takes VR relaxation apps like Guided Meditation VR to the next level by not only placing users in a tranquil environment but giving them the ability to interact with stress-relieving solutions.

“We applaud the great work XRHealth is doing to get therapeutic media into the hands of more people. Stress is responsible for 60% of all illness and disease so Healium’s biometrically-powered stories are a natural complement to XRHealth’s existing library,” said Sarah Hill, CEO & Chief Storyteller for StoryUP, the company that makes Healium in a statement.

“Stress is a factor that contributes to most fatal diseases,” adds XRHealth CEO Eran Orr. “By reducing stress and encouraging feelings of positivity we are enabling recovery, preventing future illnesses, and enabling patients to live a happier and more fulfilling life.”

Healium isn’t the only company working with XRHealth. Others include Healing HealthCare Systems and VirZOOM, the fitness company which originally created a Bluetooth connected cycling machine. XRHealth’s solution monitors user data so that doctors, caregivers, and patients can have full access to how each solution is affecting a patients’ health and control the patient VR world and experiences remotely.

Healthcare & Medical Training On The Oculus Quest

Standalone VR could be a game-changing technology for the medical industry.

The Oculus Quest is a near-perfect combination of the Oculus Rift’s powerful 6DoF tracking and the Oculus Go’s comfort and portability. This blend of quality and convenience has the potential to open up a wide range of new possibilities for a variety of critical industries and fields of study.

Two forward-thinking organizations, Karuna Labs and Osso VR, have already begun harnessing the advantages of tetherless VR, employing the Oculus Quest as a new tool in both pain management treatment and surgical training.

Founded in 2016, Karuna Labs has been using VR technology for years to provide personalized chronic pain management programs for patients suffering from chronic pain in their lower and upper limbs, neck, and lower back that’s neither invasive or pharmacological. While Karuna VR specializes in providing services to the patients themselves, Osso VR focuses on providing support to the medical professionals who assist them. By offering surgeons in-training a virtual space in which to practice true-to-life surgical procedures, Osso VR has created a cost-effective alternative to the expensive and highly-limited training opportunities currently offered.

Users participating in the program are given hands-on time with all the tools they’ll need to master before entering the ER, and introduces them to the many concepts and scenarios they’ll be faced with throughout their time behind the knife.

Developed in collaboration with clinical, medical device and technology experts from Harvard, John Hopkins, Microsoft, and several other major institutions, Osso VR is currently providing VR surgical training to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Columbia University, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Harvard Medical School, and Hospital for Special Surgery, just to name a few.

With the arrival of the Oculus Quest, both Karuna Labs and Osso VR now have a far more convenient alternative to PC VR, allowing them to access even more clinics and students. Cost-effective VR simulations using 6DoF standalone VR could very well be the technology that puts VR medical training on the map.

As previously stated, both Karuna Labs and Osso VR have been working with Quest dev kits and will launch their respective modules on the standalone headset in the near future.

Virtual Reality Medical Hypnosis Is Now A Thing

HypnoVR has been developing virtual reality-based medical hypnosis solutions to manage pain and stress and has just finished three promising retrospective clinical trials.

The outfit claims that the use of VR for managing pain and anxiety during and after medical procedures had some promising results.

The first study took place over six months at the Hospital Hautepierre in Strasbourg. As part of the trial, HypnoVR was used with selected children, in addition to standard pain management, as support for post-operative pain and to limit opioid consumption following scoliosis surgery.

The 20-minute HypnoVR session took place once a day within the first 72 hours following surgery, while the control group received the standard care.

It was concluded that the group additionally treated with virtual reality hypnosis showed a significantly lower need for supplemental treatment for anxiety and total postoperative opioid consumption, with a 45 per cent reduction of post-operative morphine consumption over 72 hours.

Recovery was also significantly faster during their hospital stay; patients’ bed-time was reduced by 21 hours.

Results were presented in October 2018 at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiology.

In the second clinical trial, patients nine-years-old and over, during dental procedures at the paediatric odontology unit of the University of Strasbourg, were selected and exposed to a VR immersion session featuring a natural environment.

The anxiety level of paediatric patients was evaluated on the APAIS scale (The Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale), with results showing the level of anxiety decreased by 45 per cent, along with an elevated level of satisfaction, with an average score of eight out of 10 from patients.

Results were presented in March 2018 at the Annual Meeting of the Société Française d’Odontologie Pédiatrique.

The third clinical study focused on alleviating pain and anxiety during ovocyte retrieval, a medically assisted reproduction procedure, at the University Hospital of Strasbourg, where HypnoVR was offered to patients as part of the standard anaesthetic care.

During the medical procedure, 38 patients were exposed to a 20-minute VR immersion featuring a natural landscape and a soothing voice, in addition to the administration of low-level sedatives. Results show that 73.7 per cent of patients felt “disconnected” and 89.4 per cent of patients considered the VR headset provided additional comfort, with a high level of satisfaction (median rating of four on a scale 0 to 5).

Results were published in March 2019 at the Journée Francophone de l’Hypnose 2019.

Queen’s University Launches Canada’s First VR Medical Training Centre

Collaborating with SimForHealth and HTC VIVE, Queen’s is Training the Physicians of the Future

Queen’s University has partnered with virtual reality innovators SimforHealth and HTC VIVE to build Canada’s first medical virtual reality training centre. The centre will allow medical students and residents the opportunity to gain experience caring for patients in a realistic but completely safe environment.

“There was a time when physicians performed their first procedures and did the majority of their learning on patients,” says Dr. Dan Howes, Director of the Queen’s Faculty of Health Sciences Clinical Simulation Centre. “Virtual reality offers exciting new opportunities for us to realistically simulate a wide range of clinical situations. We want learners to make all their beginner mistakes in the virtual environment, not on real patients.”

Queen’s educators will study the impact of virtual reality (VR) on learning, explore how it can be used effectively and develop educational content for future classes and curriculum. According to Dr. Howes, “the result will be a safer, more effective medical training.”

Queen’s partners in this venture bring a wealth of experience in VR, healthcare, and education. SimforHealth is a European company focused on digital solutions for improving the training of healthcare professionals. The company developed MedicActiV, the VR software platform that the centre will use. HTC, makers of the HTC VIVE and VIVE Pro, delivers the best premium VR experience available and is one of the world’s top VR headset systems.

Construction on the facility and VR simulation will begin this fall in the Faculty of Health Sciences Clinical Simulation Centre at Queen’s. The new space is scheduled to open in January 2019.

In the simulation case provided by SimforHealth, students will be immersed in a hospital and play the role of a physician taking care of a patient who has been admitted to the emergency room for chest pain. A video about the simulator provides a glimpse of what students will experience when using the simulation case.

Interest in using VR technology for medical education has been growing rapidly in recent years. By building the first VR Medical Training Centre in Canada, Queen’s is positioning itself at the forefront of this movement. Initially, the centre will be used primarily for undergraduate medical education. In the future Queen’s plans to use the centre in all phases of medical education, including postgraduate specialty training.

Recognizing the growing importance of immersive training in health sciences education, the medical campus at Queen’s houses 8,000 square feet of clinical simulation space.

The decision to build Canada’s first VR Medical Training Centre is just the latest example of Queen’s leadership in pursuing innovation in medical education. Last July, Queen’s became the first school in Canada to launch competency-based medical education in all of its postgraduate specialty training programs.

This HoloLens Childbirth Simulator Helps Train Medical Students

The first childbirth AR simulator.

Whether learning how to play the piano or training crews to fly an Airbus, industries are quickly figuring out different ways augmented reality can be used for training and education.

One such field we’ve seen the most experimentation within is medical. A field that demands regular training and requires students to have hands free, hardware like the HoloLens have been a growing tool within the industry.

One such medical company, CAE Healthcare, has unveiled the world’s first augmented reality childbirth simulator with integrated mother-baby physiology. Dubbed CAE LucinaAR, the HoloLens simulator lets clinical teams and learners practice emergency labor and delivery maneuvers on a mannequin while being guided by 3D holograms of the baby as it progresses down the birth canal.

In probably one of the more unique use cases we’ve seen for HoloLens training, the current version of this simulator takes students through a shoulder dystocia scenario, an uncommon pregnancy that presents a higher level of difficulty for delivery. The “learning module” provides immediate visual and physiological feedback on the effectiveness of different clinical emergency measures.

“CAE LucinaAR delivers a breakthrough simulation training experience that allows learners to see the anatomy inside the patient simulator,” said Dr. Robert Amyot, President of CAE Healthcare. “We chose Lucina as the first CAE patient simulator for integration with our augmented reality platform because we believe it will have an immediate and powerful impact on the management of shoulder dystocia deliveries and on mother-baby safety.”

CAE Healthcare is looking to expand on the CAE LucinaAR app to include other childbirth delivery and emergency scenarios.

We can only expect to see more and more HoloLens apps pop out over time as medical professionals continue to integrate AR into training programs. AR provides real-time 3D views of human anatomy that can be significantly more effective than how we learn from diagrams or 2D training videos. Immersive learning experiences like this are also what today’s tech-savvy generation of students expect from healthcare education.
