How can artists use their existing skills in this new medium and what opportunities lie ahead in the virtual worlds being built around us?
As an artist, I’ve always been fascinated by how technology is evolving and how it has changed art, how stage gave way to film and how film gave birth to digital art. But now, in 2024, we’re at the cusp of a new evolution: the Metaverse. It’s not just a buzzword; it’s a space that offers a new medium of artistic expression.
My name is Victoria Chynoweth, and I am a Wall Street Journal bestselling author and a TEDx speaker. My dual background in musical composition and technology gives me a comprehensive understanding of how the Metaverse can both challenge and enhance the traditional art of musical creation.
Artists today, regardless of discipline, have the opportunity to take their craft to new heights by engaging with virtual worlds. For me, this journey has moved from traditional stages to using CDs, to digital platforms like Spotify, and now the Metaverse is the next frontier we should be paying attention to. But what does this mean for creators today? How can artists use their existing skills in this new medium and what opportunities lie ahead in the virtual worlds being built around us? Come and let me show you.
Leveraging Artistic Skills in the Metaverse
In the last two years, the digital frontier has expanded rapidly, and for the first time, the boundaries between performer, audience and medium have dissolved. One of the most exciting things for artists is the ability to bring traditional skills into this digital domain. The virtual world doesn’t require you to abandon the skills you’ve honed over the years; it helps you amplify them. A painter, for example, can turn a static canvas into a living, breathing world where each brushstroke becomes an interactive experience for the viewer. It gets more interesting when dance performances, which had to be done in physical spaces, can today be created in virtual domains where issues of gravity, space and time do not come into play.
Projects like MILC (Media Industry Licensing Content), a blockchain-based content licensing platform, provide a stunning example of how the Metaverse can be leveraged by artists. During the Cannes Film Festival, MILC hosted virtual screening rooms where filmmakers and viewers interacted in real time despite being spread across the globe. This kind of digital experience opens up new possibilities for artists to create spaces where physical presence is no longer necessary. Now imagine directing a movie that the audience can sit down and watch but also have the ability to get into the content and interact with it.
And it’s not just the film industry embracing the Metaverse. Fashion designers are hosting virtual fashion shows and visual artists are turning their pieces into NFTs so their audience can not only view but own a unique piece of digital art. Traditional fine arts are also finding a home in these virtual spaces as well. Metaverse galleries allow artists to display their work to a global audience without the constraints of geography. In these digital venues, artists can create fully immersive experiences where visitors walk through the art and interact with it in ways that were once impossible.
Audience Interaction in the Metaverse
Another exciting aspect of the metaverse is the way it transforms the audience’s role from passive consumer to active participant. In traditional media, the audience sits back and observes. But in the Metaverse, the audience becomes part of the art itself. It creates a form of artistic expression that provides much experience for the audience, getting them involved in the creation itself.
As artists experiment with the Metaverse, they’re discovering that this new medium allows for an unprecedented level of interaction. By 2027, it’s expected that the Metaverse will account for 70 percent of annual media traffic growth on the internet, reflecting the growing trend of audience-driven art.
I, for one, can’t wait to see what’s next. So why am I telling you, an artist like me, that the Metaverse is something you should be exploring? Because it offers something special: a world where your creativity isn’t limited by physical space or traditional mediums. Whether you’re a musician, filmmaker, painter or performer, the Metaverse has opened up new ways for us to connect with our audience, expand our artistry and even monetize our work.
