‘Having Difficult Conversations’ is the title of the first immersive SHRM learning experience, which has been designed to help people leaders raise sensitive issues with their employees. In the experience, learners are placed in a common workplace scenario where they must navigate a complex workplace conversation about an employee returning to work from medical leave by applying empathetic listening techniques.
By practicing having conversations in VR, users can learn how to respond in real life with the confidence to act on the material learned. Through the VR simulation, learners are placed in a safe space to practice some challenging but necessary conversations. Based on the book ‘Talking Taboo: Making the Most of Polarizing Discussions at Work,’ which was written by SHRM Chief Knowledge Officer Alex Alonso, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, the VR learning experience applies the ‘Me+We+WO+RK’ framework to foster greater inclusion in occupational environments, according to Moth+Flame.

Taboo Talk introduces the Me+We+WO+RK framework to help managers navigate tricky conversations to promote a sense of belonging and inclusion,” said Alonso. “This new program brings the framework to life by allowing learners to practice using the framework to solve issues commonly associated with complex or troubling workplace conversations.”
