Valve Is Working With OpenBCI To Solve VR Motion Sickness And Increase Immersion

In a recent interview with1 News Valve CEO Gabe Newell discussed a partnership with OpenBCI to improve VR headsets, enhance immersion, and solve for VR motion sickness.

The vast majority of the interview focuses on forward-looking predictions for brain computer interface technology (BCIs) which is hardware that is able to interface directly with your brain signals to detect emotional responses, feelings, and more.

“We’re working on an open source project so that everybody can have high-resolution [brain signal] read technologies built into headsets, in a bunch of different modalities,” Newell said. “If you’re a software developer in 2022 who doesn’t have one of these in your test lab, you’re making a silly mistake…software developers for interactive experience[s] — you’ll be absolutely using one of these modified VR head straps to be doing that routinely — simply because there’s too much useful data.”

There are two specific benefits that VR would have from this discussed by Newell. For starters, it could significantly enhance immersion, such as increasing difficulty dynamically if a player is getting bored or feeling unchallenged. Or perhaps in a procedural game if the BCI notices when a randomized layout is something you dislike or particularly enjoy.

Newell then goes on to explain that in the future, BCIs will enable the creation of virtual worlds that far exceed our perceptions of reality, stating that, “the real world will stop being the metric that we apply to the best possible visual fidelity.”

Near the end there is also a discussion of how BCIs in VR can essentially solve for VR motion sickness, or that feeling of vertigo that makes some users nauseous during particular types of artificial movement. The feeling can already be suppressed artificially. “It’s more of a certification issue than it is a scientific issue,” explains Newell.

Perhaps this is why Valve has been so quiet about their plans post-Valve Index — they’re hard at work on what’s coming for the next-generation of interacting with computers.

Das Hotel Dachsteinkönig in Österreich will mit technischer Unterhaltung auf sich aufmerksam machen. Das Leading Family Hotel & Resort bietet jetzt einen „Virtual Reality Room“, in dem Gäste ab sofort in interaktive Welten eintauchen können.

In den virtuellen Weiten gehen die Spieler auf Klettertour ohne Seil und Haken, erkunden den menschlichen Körper als U-Boot im Blutkreislauf, oder erfüllen sich ihren Traum, als Astronaut ins Weltall zu fliegen. Ein Highlight sind die eigens für die VR-Anwendung inszenierten Cirque du Soleil Darbietungen, die interaktiv in 360 Grad erlebbar sind.

Angeschafft wurden die Virtual Reality Systeme HTC Vive Pro und Ocolus GO für bis zu vier Spieler. Kinder ab zehn Jahre dürfen den VR-Room in Begleitung eines Erwachsenen nutzen, für Teenager ab 14 Jahre ist das Angebot frei zugänglich. Die Auswahl der Virtual Reality Anwendungen wurde auf Familien, für welche das 4-Stern-Superior Haus ausgelegt ist, zugeschnitten.

Brettspiele hat der Dachsteinkönig zwar nach wie vor im Repertoire, aber Hoteldirektor Florian Mayer ist angetan von den digitalen Anwendungen „Wir gehen mit der Zeit und gerade Tourismusbetriebe könnten ohne Technologien gar nicht mehr existieren. Die Grenze zur digitalen Welt ziehe ich dort, wo sie sich mit gelebter Gastfreundschaft schneiden. Auch in sehr ferner Zukunft wird der Gast im Leading Family Hotel und Resort Dachsteinkönig persönlich vor der Eingangstüre abgeholt“.

INTEL TECH LEARNING LAB BRINGS IMMERSIVE STEM EDUCATION TO A SCHOOL NEAR YOU

Remember back in the olden days… when you were in high-school, there was that one super-nerdy computer class, right? All the school geeks (mostly men, as I recall) just loved to take that computer course to fill their electives. If you were anything like me, you were moderately interested, but when you saw the audience you knew you didn’t belong there. If only someone could’ve told us then what we know now about the importance of computing skills in the modern workforce. I’m 100% certain the audience for that course would have been different, had we known.

Things have progressed since then, yes. But sadly, our education system today is no better at preparing students for the level of technical expertise that will be required of them in the years to come. As educators and parents, I fundamentally believe that we owe it to our children to prepare them for the future-state workforce requirements across America. If you’re with me on that, then I’ve got some encouraging news!!

Times are a-changing (thank goodness!). We’re now living in an age where our children’s future employers have begun taking tech education matters into their own hands. I’m referring to Intel, and its Tech Learning Lab tour across America. This mobile learning lab has built-in equipment for the hands-on demonstrations and lab practicals that high school students need in order to experience and fully comprehend the nature of what’s in store for them in their future careers.

If you’re an educator or parent, then you’ll probably be really excited to learn the topics that the Intel Tech Learning Lab are bringing to high school students around the nation. Those include:

Robotics – Students are building and testing their own virtual robots.
Virtual reality – Where students get a chance to experience 3D modeling, augmented- and virtual- reality with their own two hands.
Artificial intelligence – Students begin identifying what AI is and how it impacts their everyday lives.
Internet-of-things – Students discuss the future of tech and begin to anticipate how large of a role IoT will have in the future of work.

The emergence of Intel’s Tech Learning Lab marks a fundamental shift from how students have typically been exposed to the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics curriculums. Acer Academy provides immersive learning using VR, MR

Emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) have been utilized in the entertainment and industrial sectors. Technology company Acer decides to maximize their use in education to enable teachers to share educational content and make learning more immersive than before.

In the Acer Academy Summit held recently, the company discussed the potential of immersive learning through VR and MR. In the context of classrooms, VR takes students’ learning to a more imaginative setting. MR, on the other hand, lets them process information while interacting with VR and augmented realities.

Carren Garcia, senior manager for Commercial Sales at Acer said that it is the company’s mission to help not just schools but also other organizations in their digital and technological education efforts through Acer Academy.

With the Acer Windows Mixed Reality Solutions, students use a headset, a compatible Windows PC, and advanced motion controllers to get an immersive experience that need not be expensive and complicated. MR creates realistic scenarios while projecting a simulated environment that defies geographic barriers. Without leaving the four walls of the classroom, students can see new environments and grasp knowledge through immersive learning.

“Immersive learning could only be possible through the guidance of someone who understands how to maximize technology available to them,” said Manuel Wong, managing director of Acer Philippines, in a media release. “This is why it’s important to integrate MR solutions with our educational system to help educators understand how using VR and MR can make learning more fun and engaging for their students.”

Acer Academy has over 130 partner-schools around the country, providing schools with tools in adapting digital classrooms with innovative means. By digitizing teaching tools such as online syllabi, web-based worksheets and modules, and electronically programmed learning activities. It helps educators adapt effective teaching methods as well as make learning fun for students.
