Partnership can help bring interactive real-time 3D learning experiences to classrooms

D2L, a global learning technology company, today announced a new partnership with Unity, the world’s leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 3D (RT3D) content with a goal to transform the education landscape through classroom integration of immersive Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and RT3D technologies. The partnership is a direct response to the increased demand for innovative and engaging learning experiences in the classroom.

Unity Launches visionOS Beta Program to enable developers to create games and apps for Apple Vision Pro

Unity, a leading platform for creating and growing real-time 3D (RT3D) content, has today announced the launch of its beta program for visionOS that includes access to Unity PolySpatial, which will power Unity content alongside other apps in the Shared Space on Apple Vision Pro. Featuring integration with the Unity editor, creators can now build experiences that run in visionOS, and leverage the technology and features of the Apple Vision Pro.

By combining Unity’s new PolySpatial technology with Apple’s RealityKit-managed app rendering, content created in Unity will have a unified look and feel, alongside other apps in visionOS, according to Unity. The company added that it has worked closely with Apple to offer support for visionOS and PolySpatial to ensure that users will be able to experience Unity apps on day one of the Vision Pro device’s launch. Developers interested in signing up for the beta can visit www.unity.com/spatial.

With this announcement, creators and developers will now be able to build brand new experiences and port existing ones to visionOS, previewing from the Unity Editor directly to Apple Vision Pro for quick iteration. New authoring workflows will enable creators to blend content seamlessly with the physical world, while tools for input will provide natural and intuitive ways for users to control their content with just their eyes and hands on Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset.

According to Unity there are three main approaches to creating spatial experiences on the visionOS platform:

Port an existing virtual reality game or create a new fully immersive experience, replacing the player’s surroundings with digital environments;
Mix content with passthrough to create immersive experiences that blend digital content with the real world.
Run multiple immersive applications side by side within passthrough while in the Shared Space.

The company noted that for both porting an existing application or creating an entirely new one, these are more straightforward with Unity, and will involve:

Workflow – With full support for the visionOS platform in Unity, developers can see their projects running on Vision Pro in just a few steps.

Graphics: Unity recommends using the Universal Render Pipeline for visionOS projects so as to enable foveated rendering for higher-fidelity visuals.

Input: People will use their hands and eyes to interact with content on Vision Pro. Unity’s XR Interaction Toolkit adds hand tracking to make it easier for developers to adapt existing projects. Developers can also react to built-in system gestures with the Unity Input System, and access raw hand joint data for custom interactions with the XR Hands package.

Shared Space: Unity’s new PolySpatial technology enables developers to create apps that can run side by side in the Shared Space.

Unity noted that in addition to immersive apps, developers can also run content in a window that users can resize and reposition in their space (shown above). This is the easiest way to bring existing mobile and desktop applications to visionOS, according to Unity, and is the default mode for content targeting the visionOS platform. Beta support for windowed applications is available to try today in Unity 2022 LTS (2022.3.5f1 or newer).

Immersive 3D social platform Spatial announces Creator Toolkit powered by Unity

Spatial, an immersive 3D social platform for creatives to build their online worlds, connect and share digital experiences, has this week announced the Spatial Creator Toolkit powered by Unity.

Spatial stated that the new toolkit takes away the friction for digital designers and architects by allowing them to publish first-class visuals and interactive spaces across mobile, desktop web and virtual reality (VR) in one click. With ready-made assets, creations that may have taken days to perfect previously, can now take a matter of seconds, according to the company. In addition, the latest Spatial toolkit allows users to interact and play within the space around them.

Using Unity’s SDK, Spatial is bringing visual quality directly to the web browser, with fast load times and no download or installs required. The company is hoping that the new toolkit will encourage new innovation and game-level development across the platform.

“Making immersive platforms easy and accessible for anyone to come in and start building, without prior knowledge in digital design, has always been an important factor in making Spatial the inclusive and open metaverse it is today. This toolkit will open doors for creators to make out-of-this world and exciting places to be, in just a few clicks. Our recent Hublot stadium had visitors spend over 75,000 minutes in the space in just three weeks. With our latest upgrades, we can build live multiplayer experiences where fans will be able to score a goal on the virtual World Cup pitch. This changes the face of the metaverse from a static world where we observe, to dynamic and interactive 3D spaces where we can actively participate,” said Jinha Lee, CPO and Co-founder, Spatial.

“Creating professional-grade lighting would previously have taken a trained designer at least two days to achieve, and now anyone can do it in a click of a button,” said Anand Agarawala, CEO and Co-founder, Spatial. “It simultaneously publishes across web, mobile and VR to make building so seamless that literally anyone can be a top rate digital developer.”

To aid in the experience of interacting with 3D models within the platform, Spatial recently announced its Sketchfab integration, allowing users access to the world’s most expansive library of 3D models and objects for a more customizable and creative experience.

Exactly one year on from the company’s initial pivot to become the metaverse platform for culture and creators, Spatial stated that it has seen constant growth. With over 500,000+ registered creators, two million unique users and 127 million hours spent in the platform over the last 12 months, it is fast becoming one of the most active immersive social platforms for creators to build, share and hang out with the communities that are important to them, according to the company.

Massive funding and resource opportunities open to schools harnessing XR

Last Friday, Metas Immersive Learning division announced a major strategic partnership with real-time 3D (RT3D) engine developer Unity to enhance extended reality (XR) learning for students, schools, and content creators.

Accelerating Immersive Learning for the Next Generation

The partnership accelerates the development of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR) learning solutions, and the alliance will familiarise tutors with the benefits of immersive education.

Jessica Lindl, the Vice President of Social Impact at Unity, added:

Its more important than ever to connect young people with the skills needed for future jobs, as these help chart a clear path from learning to earning opportunities.

The XR firms will inspire creators to develop Metaverse-based learning experiences, namely on Metas Horizon brand of applications, including Worlds, Workrooms, and Venues.

The firms will support future Metaverse content creators via Metas Immersive Learning initiative; Vice President of Community and Impact Partnerships at Meta, John Cantarella, also said:

Meta has raised over $1 billion for international schools in the past year. Additionally, the Menlo-Park based firm provides free licenses, training, and resources to over 450,000 international students.

Unity and Meta enable educators to empower learning opportunities using XR technology. To support this, the firms deployed two grants.

Create with VR Grant

Meta and Unity offer two avenues of support through its Create with VR Grant, which contains two separate applications.

The Create with VR Headset Grant provides Meta Quest headsets to learning establishments that provide Metaverse content creation education.

With notification coming in May, successful applicants will receive a headset package from Meta by July. The Menlo Park-based firm also provides unboxing and onboarding support.

The grant is available now to US schools and non-profit establishments teaching students aged 13 and older, prioritising applicants working with underserved communities.

Additionally, the firms opened applications to their Create with VR for Educators training opportunity. A globally available and free XR training course that is open to schools, teachers, and trainers wanting to harness VR in the classroom.

Unity leads the course that provides roughly 30 hours of accredited professional learning between July 12th and August 5th, 2022. Also, the classes run for a second time between August 30th and September 20th, 2022.

The training provides teachers with support, networking, and resources to assist with VR education through live sessions and learning modules.

Higher Ed XR Innovation Grant

Open until June 15th, 2022, Meta and Unitys Higher Ed XR Innovation Grant gives institutions capital and developmental support to create programs to educate their students through XR or RT3D-based immersive learning tools. Meta also gives special consideration to programs aimed at underserved learners.

Additionally, the grant will focus on innovative projects that train future workforces with the skills required to create Metaverse content in an expanded vision to widen the global XR talent pool.

Judges will award funding to applicants based on inclusion, impact, viability, and innovation. The grant accepts projects at all stages of development.

Successful applicants receive $1 million from Meta Education and Unitys Charitable Fund. Also, assistance comes from the Tides Foundation.

Siemens: Using digital twins to connect customers and employees

Siemens continues to connect employees and customers with a virtual simulation lab that they created in two weeks. The lab is a digital twin representation of the physical Siemens location in Munich and allows them to continue demonstrating projects virtually, such as their dust remover demonstrator. To top it all off, it was a winner of the Unity Awards in 2020.

Stratasys: Launching products virtually

As physical events began to be canceled, Stratasys had to change its plans surrounding the global launch of its new Stratasys J55 3D printer. Working in partnership with Visionaries 777, they created an AR mobile application to help customers across the world visualize the new 3D printer in any physical space at 1:1 scale from the safety of their own home or office.

Volkswagen: Virtually transforming auto shows

With the cancellation of the Geneva International Motor Show, a key event for Volkswagen, the automaker made history by hosting its very first virtual motor show. Working with Endava, VW showcased 36 vehicles in great detail with a 360°, real-time 3D experience and allowed visitors to interact with its new models from their web browser anywhere in the world.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs: Modernizing crisis skills training

Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is critical to staff and patient safety, but effective training materials are critical for healthcare workers. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) worked with the studio Immersion to provide healthcare workers and service members an interactive, web-based safety training experience for putting on and removing PPE.

Unity acquires 3D and Augmented Reality product visualization platform RestAR

Unity, a leading platform for creating and operating real-time 3D (RT3D) content, has announced the acquisition of RestAR, a Tel Aviv-based computer vision and deep learning company that enables fashion brands, online retailers, and marketers to scan and render physical consumer products in high-quality 3D for augmented reality (AR) visualizations, using only a mobile device.

Coming on the heels of the launch of Unity Forma, a new tool that allows marketers to create and publish interactive experiences from 3D data, RestAR will extend the power of interactive RT3D technology to marketers by generating a digital twin of any product or object in 3D.

“With the acquisition of RestAR, Unity is giving massive power to brands, retailers, and consumers by democratizing digital marketing for almost any product,” said Dave Rhodes, Senior Vice President and GM, Unity Create Solutions, Unity. “What was once out of reach for those outside of large manufacturers and consumer products companies, is now available to businesses of any size looking for a tangible, effective way to market their products. We fundamentally believe anyone should be able to leverage Unity’s products and this acquisition is another step in that direction.”

According to Unity, RestAR allows online businesses and marketers to create high-quality 3D models of products easily, since scanning an object with RestAR only involves taking a 1-minute video to complete, and does not require any technical knowledge or special hardware. Scans are then processed and highly-compressed in the cloud using AI-based technology. Brands that RestAR currently works with include fashion brands and e-commerce platforms including UGG, Off-White, Wix, Dafiti, Hoka One One, Palm Angels, Heron Preston, and more.

“The COVID-19 crisis accelerated the expansion of retail and other industries towards new consumer behavior and digital transformation. Alongside Unity, which has already established itself as a leader in rendering 3D content across multiple industries, RestAR, combined with Unity Forma will be a visual content game-changer for businesses and marketers across industries,” said Bar Saraf, CEO, RestAR.

That’s why we recently announced Unity Reflect, our new product that creates interactive real-time 3D experiences for any device from Autodesk Revit in one click. It helps every project stakeholder, from ownership to design and construction teams, make the right design decisions in real-time.

At the AIA Conference on Architecture (A’19) last month, we announced Unity Reflect, our new product for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. In a nutshell, Unity Reflect enables key stakeholders to review federated BIM/CAD models on the device of their choice and make better design decisions together. Unity Reflect is accessible to both technical and non-technical users.

Unity Reflect: Key questions

As we approach the launch of Unity Reflect, we thought it would be helpful to share answers to the five most commonly asked questions we heard at A’19, AU London, and elsewhere.

How do I get early access to Unity Reflect?

While we would love to give access to everyone, Unity Reflect is not an open beta program or preview release, so only a limited number of AEC firms will be able to get early access. Please contact your Unity business development manager and he/she can put you up for consideration. If you are not a Unity customer, reach out here. Slots are filling up fast, so don’t delay!

Which design applications will Unity Reflect support?

We will support Autodesk Revit and Trimble SketchUp out-of-the-box and are developing an API to extend support to other third-party applications. While this will comprise the initial set of integrations available at launch, that’s just the start. We plan to release many more integrations over time based on the needs of our customers.

Can I use the Unity Editor in tandem with Unity Reflect?

You do not need access to the Editor to use Unity Reflect. The beauty of Unity Reflect is you don’t have to learn new software and can instead continue working from your go-to design tools. In fact, you don’t even need software development skills of any kind. With one click, Unity Reflect does all the complex work of preparing, federating, and transferring BIM/CAD data to any Unity-supported platform, making it easy to review models simultaneously on phones, tablets, computers, and AR devices.

However, if you are a Unity developer, you can bring this data into the Editor to customize and build upon these projects to create the best experience for your end users. Once your data is in the Editor, you can add anything Unity supports to your project, such as the Unity Particle System, Terrain to create landscapes, and Skyboxes to represent the sky of your choosing. You can also take advantage of Unity’s extensible platform to seamlessly deploy to over 25 platforms, including AR and VR wearables.

Does Unity Reflect have the ability to overlay BIM models localized to the real world?
Unity Reflect is built with AR Foundation and supports the latest and greatest features of Apple’s ARKit and Android’s ARCore. This allows a user to place a model in the real world in a localized way, but the alignment of models to the real world has to be done manually.

How does BIM filtering work?

Because Unity Reflect preserves BIM/CAD metadata, you can zero in on different parts of the central, federated model in real-time 3D (as shown in the image above). From the structural columns and framing to doors and furniture, Unity Reflect makes it easy to get an interactive, immersive 3D view of various building components to inform design decisions.

Develop iOS and Android Mobile Augmented Reality Using Unity

Augmented reality (AR) is likely the most significant emerging technology for business applications, even more so than virtual reality (VR). According to Wikipedia, augmented reality is “a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.” AR does not block out the real world and the task at hand, and that is the reason for the practicality of mobile augmented reality: its most important use cases for business and learning are in the performance aid or guidance category.

There are many significant mobile AR business and learning applications—from medical training to field service to retail—for technicians, office occupations, and consumers. Most people already own the target platform: a smartphone or smart device, running either iOS or Android. No helmet is required, it’s all hand-held.

According to a Guild survey conducted in March of 2019, creating augmented reality experiences for mobile devices will be a key activity in 2019 and 2020.

Meeting the challenge of mobile AR development

Development of mobile AR applications is simple but requires specific skills, knowledge, and precision. It involves three or four software tools, depending on whether your target devices are iOS, Android, or both. This article provides basic information about the development process, and offers a recommendation on how to obtain the specific knowledge and skills.

By downloading the software resources, experimenting after reading their FAQ files, and getting help from user communities, you may be able to prototype an initial mobile AR app. But that depends on your level of experience in software and application development. Some may be timid about app development or concerned about needing to develop for both iOS and Android.

To get new designers and developers around that, The eLearning Guild is offering a hands-on workshop presented by Jeff Batt, an expert developer with AR app creation experience, at the 2019 Realities360 Conference & Expo. The workshop, “BYOD: Creating Mobile Augmented Reality Experiences with Unity ,” will walk you through development of mobile AR apps for iPhones, iPads, and Android devices. Conference registration is required in order to register for the workshop.

The mobile AR development process

Unity is a game-changer for creating immersive AR experiences for Android and iOS devices, but Unity itself does not allow AR development. Unity’s strengths are in its extensibility and in creating shapes and objects for immersive environments, and it supports creators who are not programmers.

Because Unity does not support direct development of AR, the development process for mobile devices uses Vuforia to attach digital content to physical and virtual objects, and either ARKit 2 or ARCore (depending on your target devices) to publish your content to portable devices.

There are five basic steps in the process:

Download and install the necessary software to the appropriate development platform (Windows PC or Mac).
Using Unity (and other appropriate software), create media, shapes, and objects needed for the AR experience you intend to make.
Using Vuforia, attach digital content to the physical and virtual objects.
Using ARKit2 or ARCore, publish and test your AR application.
Deploy your AR app to the appropriate app store for download by users.

Workshop details

Jeff’s workshop will support development of mobile AR for both iOS and Android devices, enabling you to reach millions of users with devices they already have. You will receive resources and sample files that you can use long after the one-day session is over.

In this workshop, you will learn:

Unity basics
Code snippets that can be used for both ARKit and ARCore
How to create shapes and objects within Unity
How to import media and 3-D objects from other tools
How to trigger events when you interact with AR objects
Steps you would take to deploy your app to the app store

Preparing for the workshop

Complete these steps before arriving at the workshop.

Registration

First, register for Realities360 Conference & Expo 2019 and then for the specific workshop P04: “BYOD: Creating Mobile Augmented Reality Experiences with Unity.” Note the discounts available to Guild members. You can receive an early Conference registration discount of $100 by registering on or before May 10, 2019.

Software installation

Download and install the necessary software onto the laptop you will bring to the workshop. These are long downloads and you most likely will not be able to complete them and the installation relying on hotel Wi-Fi.

Download and install the free Unity Personal, if you are eligible to do so. If you are not eligible, be sure you have downloaded your licensed version of Unity onto the laptop you will bring to the workshop. The Unity site linked above makes the conditions for eligibility clear.
Vuforia Studio (30-day free trial: download after June 20, 2019 to allow for the 30 day trial!)

Jeff will provide two more software installations from a thumb drive at the workshop: ARKit 2 for iOS device applications, and/or ARCore for Android device applications.

Hardware

You need the following hardware to participate in the workshop:

Windows PC and mouse if developing for Android (will not work for developing iOS AR)
Mac computer running current Mac OS if developing for either iOS or Android (an iPad does not meet this requirement) and a mouse
Android device and/or iOS device (to test your app)

Your PC or Mac must be able to accept the ARKit and/or ARCore packages from a thumb drive.

Bring whatever charger, brick, or other power supply you need for your PC or Mac. While The Guild will make every reasonable effort to ensure that power is available to all workshop participants, it might be wise to pack an extension cord “just in case.” You will also need to have whatever connection cable is required to download your completed AR app to your target device.

VR- und AR-Szenarien aus CAD und CGI

Autodesk rückt mit einem offenen Ökosystem einfach umsetzbare Daten und Inhalte in das Zentrum neuer AR/VR-Prozesse. Die 3D-Daten gelangen mit der Unterstützung von Partnern wie Unity, dem Anbieter der gleichnamigen 3D-Entwicklungsumgebung, in ein VR-, AR- oder Echtzeitszenario.

Technologien wie Augmented und Virtual Reality verändern die Ideenfindung, die Konstruktion und die Fertigung und nicht zuletzt die Wahrnehmung. Das betrifft Fabriken, Bauwerke und Autos genauso, wie den Bereich der Bildung und die Unterhaltung. Zudem gibt es immer mehr VR-Inhalte.

Mit Unity verbindet Autodesk bereits seit einem Jahr eine Zusammenarbeit, welche die Unity-Plattform enger mit den Designwerkzeugen von Autodesk wie 3ds Max oder Maya koppeln soll. Damit sollen 3D-Experten schneller interaktive 3D-Szenarien entwickeln können.

Nun stößt die Zusammenarbeit in weitere Bereiche vor. Autodesk und Unity spannen zusammen, um Visualisierung und Echtzeiterfahrungen auch anderen Branchen wie Automotive, Architektur, Bauwesen und weiteren Kunden aus der Medienbranche anzubieten. Konstrukteure, Ingenieure und Kreative können dann mit der Software von Autodesk auf der Basis ihrer CAD oder CGI-Daten schnell immersive Inhalte entwickeln und einsetzen, sie verbinden und sich damit vernetzen. Die Folge: präzisere Entscheidungen durch bessere Informationen, was die zu erwartenden Ergebnisse von Entwürfen, Projekten und Produktionen betrifft. Unity unterstützt mehr als 25 Plattformen. Damit lassen sich die erstellten Projekte auf fast jedem Gerät an jedem Ort anschauen und erleben.

Die neuen Schnittstellen sind:

Revit: Anwender können mit einem Klick Revit-Modelle in immersive Szenarien verwandeln. Das soll Architekten dabei unterstützen, ihre Entwürfe den verschiedenen Projektbeteiligten verständlicher zu machen. Durch die Interaktion im 3D-Modell können Anwender Fehler erkennen und beseitigen, bevor der Bau beginnt. Das spart Zeit, Geld und weitere Ressourcen.
VRED: Die Schnittstelle zwischen Unity und VRED vernetzt das Ökosystem in der Automobilentwicklung und soll den den Automotive-Experten zu schnelleren Entscheidungen verhelfen und den Produkten zu einer beschleunigten Marktreife. Daten aus VRED lassen sich für interaktive Anwendungen im Marketing, am POS oder für interaktive Trainingsumgebungen verwenden.
Shotgun: Diese Integration soll es Teams aus der Film- und Gamingbranche, die bereits Unity-Lösungen einsetzen, leichter machen, viele unterschiedliche Datentypen (Alembis, USD, FBX u. a.) mit Shotgun zu koordinieren. Die 3D-Künstler sollen sich nicht mehr mit der Datenverwaltung herumschlagen müssen, sondern sich auf ihre eigentliche Arbeit konzentrieren können. Animationsspezialisten und Modellierer können im Kontext einer Sequenz arbeiten und erhalten Echtzeit-Feedback über Änderungen in der Belichtung, der Platzierung der Kamera oder der Auswahl der Anlagen. Die Analytik liefert den Produktionsleitern genauere Einblicke.
