Dutch Transit Gets a VR Overhaul! – Blending Education and Virtual Tourism

Changefied launches a free, immersive platform for navigating the Netherlands‘ public transport

Recently, Changefied launched a new targeted immersive learning platform on the Meta Quest portfolio. The firm debuted Dutch Virtual Public Transport, a training application developed alongside Dutch transport organizations that provides a virtual reality simulation of the region’s public transport system to help international visitors and neurodivergent individuals understand routes.

Tim van Dam, CEO of Changefied, noted that the Dutch Virtual Public Transport VR experience allows users to “prepare visitors to the Netherlands for using Dutch public transport so that they can confidently travel as soon as they arrive.

The solution is a spin-off of the firm’s Virtual OV learning platform, allowing users to practice in a safe, virtual environment with features that simulate trip planning, checking in, navigating stations, and transferring between routes.

The training solution, ready for Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets, is available at the Meta Quest store for free.

Targeted for Visitor Requirements

“We expect this to have a positive impact on tourism and the overall travel experience in the Netherlands,” van Dam noted. The firm explained how the immersive training platform could combine education and virtual tourism to entice visitors to the region.

Moreover, the parent Virtual OV learning platform is targeted to support neurodivergent learners, with Changefied working with Dutch healthcare institutions to develop targeted step-by-step training solutions.

This is not the first training solution from Changefied. The firm’s Virtual TechLab allows users to practice assembling IT components in a virtual environment “without limitations,” such as hardware, time, and money constraints, according to the Meta store description.

Changefied describes Virtual TechLab on its website as the leading virtual learning environment revolutionizing IT hardware education. The application is specifically designed for educational institutions, particularly those specialising in technical education and IT-related subjects.

The benefits of Virtual TechLab include its accessibility for all proficiency levels, from beginners to advanced users. It fosters a collaborative space where students can learn from one another.

Changefied was established in June 2023 as a North Holland-based firm. Its mission is to explore immersive education’s future through integrated, repeatable, and engaging learning procedures.

ImagineAR sign a $10 million deal to push a blueprint for immersive tourism services

XR is growing, and so are its use cases. While here at XR Today, we discuss at length use cases like healthcare and heavy industry; for example, plenty of other professional sectors are experimenting with emerging XR benefits.

One of these sectors is tourism, and augmented reality firm ImagineAR recently inked a $10 million Design and Project Installation Agreement with Ontario real estate developer Mr J Grewal to deliver a 25,000-square-foot immersive experience centre in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

ImagineAR is developing the project under its Framedays subsidiary, which will facilitate the creation of immersive attractions, AR racing, VR Gaming, and Mixed Reality experiences to boost regional tourism.

Grewal explained:

An immersive center inside a hotel transforms the guest experience from a simple stay to a journey of discovery, blending technology, culture, and entertainment seamlessly. In Canada, where travelers seek both adventure and authenticity, this innovation allows hotels to offer curated, interactive experiences that not only enhances guest satisfaction but also drives longer stays and repeat visits, making it the future of hospitality.

Moreover, the leaders of this agreement will also provide on-site support, software development, and 24/7 mobile app guest support.

The Niagara Falls XR tourism programme will continue to receive support via ImagineAR’s “AR-AI” (Augmented Reality-Artificial Intelligence Integrated Revenue) business model, which aims to drive scalable revenue over time for its tourism hotspots.

The Future

The Niagara Falls XR centre is due to debut its immersive experiences later this year; ImagineAR names this a “blueprint” for deploying similar constructions in other regions.

Grewal also added:

We have already expressed interest to open two more locations, and we are currently in discussions to open our 2nd immersive center in Ontario with much larger square footage.

“This partnership is a transformative milestone,” noted Alen Paul Silverrstieen, CEO of ImagineAR.

Silverrstieen expressed that Niagara Falls’ tourist base “provides the ideal stage to showcase how AR/AI can redefine experiential entertainment,” and ImagineAR securing its $10 million contract “accelerates” the adoption of ImagineAR’s AR-AI model.

“This is just the beginning of our vision to make immersive AR/AI a staple of global tourism,” Silverrstieen said in closing.

How VR Technology Can Revive The Tourism Industry

What is Virtual Tourism and how is it backing the Tourism Sector?

The global tourism and hospitality industry is severely affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A pandemic impacts the tourism industry the most as it involves traveling of people from one place to another. History has witnessed that epidemics and pandemics have an immediate impact on the hotels and restaurants, airlines industries, travel agencies, etc., due to the international travel restrictions, media coverage and government measures.

World Bank shows that the cost to the global economy of SARS is projected to have been US$54 billion. At the same time, the organisation foresees that a ‘severe flu pandemic’ could cost more than US$3 trillion, roughly 5% of global GDP.

Coronavirus outbreak has devastated in such a way that the travel and tourism sectors cannot expect to resume to pre-pandemic levels until 2024. How can the industry cope up with these damages?

Well, with the latest advanced technologies like virtual reality (VR) technology, airlines, travel agencies, and tourism boards can attract and engage prospective customers. “VR is going to change the way both many of the things we do today and some new and important areas are transformed like tourism,” opines Shaun Collins, CEO of CCS Insight.

Virtual reality immerses users in a computer-generated and interactive 3D environment. It may involve use of various props. Users may be needed to wear gloves and there may be other sensations like movement (i.e. in a rollercoaster simulator), feeling (i.e. if the user is sprayed with water) and smell. In other words, VR emulates the physical world by escalating one or more of users’ senses and tricking the brain into feeling like it’s right there in the virtual world. It could act like augmented reality and 360-degree photography to give a taste of virtual tourism. Several examples listed below prove that companies have already technology like VR to offer virtual tours to users as well as to revive the travel and tourism industry.

• Berlin-based io, for example, is a startup which has developed a platform to transport people to historical sites around the globe through VR explorable in photorealistic quality.

• Another startup is Jaunt VR that produces 360-degree films, shows, documentaries, tours on their app all in VR. Users can pick any one among 20 different channels. If a user picks among the Redwood National Park, San Francisco Giants, it will unveil the secrets of Machu Picchu.

• YouVisit, founded in 2009, is an online virtual tourism platform that allows travel companies to make and share 360-degree photos and VR tours with 1000+ pieces of interactive VR experiences.

• Ascape is another VR application for travel which reduces your work by sorting out contents for you. Countries such as Australia and North Korea organise contests, activities (Rio Carnival), spiritual journeys, underwater shoots, guided tours, and also from tourism giants like Thomas Cook, JetBlue etc.

It’s unlikely that most of the companies pushing through virtual reality tourist experiences intend to replace physical tourism. For the most cases, VR tourism will be harnessed as yet another digital marketing device.

One the other hand, as the world realises the potential of VR and its varied applications in different industries, including travel, retail, and automotive, India is also witnessing a similar trend. Although VR was relegated for only a gaming greek, it is now gradually ending up with the tourism sector, explicitly experimenting and testing out its fascinating potential.

India in 2017 generated US$210 billion in revenue from the tourism sector that accounted for 9.5% of India’s GDP. Today there is a mindset shift during COVID-19 circumstances. India is also improving its travel scenario beyond just recreation to make it a lifestyle choice.

Virtuelles Reisen: Mit Remote Tourism und VR-Anwendungen die Welt erkunden

Fremde Orte erkunden ohne das Sofa zu verlassen? Was noch vor einigen Jahren undenkbar erschien, wird im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung zur (virtuellen) Realität.

In den vergangenen Wochen hat die Corona-Krise den Alltag vieler Menschen massiv verändert. Dinge, die noch im Februar als selbstverständlich galten, waren im März schon nicht mehr möglich. Beispielsweise das Reisen.

Naja, zumindest das physische Reisen. Dank zahlreicher Angebote im Internet ist es im 21. Jahrhundert natürlich jederzeit problemlos möglich, an die entferntesten Orte diese Welt zu reisen. Sei es nun mit Virtual Reality-Brille, 360-Grad-Video oder gar ferngesteuertem Guide. Ein Überblick.

Remote Tourism: Virtueller Guide auf den Färöer-Inseln

Die zu Dänemark gehörenden Färöer-Inseln im Nordatlantik gelten derzeit noch als Geheimtipp. Erholungsuchende erwarten hier atemberaubende Landschaften mit hohen Bergen, tiefen Tälern und engen Fjorden. Die naturgewaltige Inselgruppe ist geprägt von Vulkanen und Gletschern. Im Gegensatz zu Inseln wie Island ist Färöer allerdings noch nicht von Touristen überlaufen.

Während der Corona-Krise kam der Tourismus – wie auch andernorts – dann allerdings vollständig zum Erliegen. Grund genug für die dortige Tourismusbehörde, sich etwas ganz besonderes einfallen zu lassen: Remote Tourism. Täglich macht sich ein Inselbewohner mit einer GoPro-Kamera auf dem Kopf auf den Weg, um Färöer zu erkunden. Dieser Rundgang wird live ins Internet übertragen.

Der Clou an der Sache ist aber ein anderer: Der Guide kann von den Zuschauern ferngesteuert werden. Dazu muss man sich vorab auf der Website registrieren und kann dann eine Minute die Steuerung übernehmen. Das funktioniert sowohl am Desktop als auch mobil. Und tatsächlich führt der Guide alle Befehle aus, sofern er sich dadurch keinen Gefahren aussetzt.

360-Grad-Touren machen ganze Städte virtuell erlebbar

Zugegeben, der Remote Tourism auf den Färöer-Inseln zählt unter Anbetracht der interaktiven Komponenten auf beiden Seiten des Bildschirms sicherlich zu den aufwendigsten Arten, virtuell zu reisen. Aus diesem Grund ist das Projekt derzeit weltweit auch einmalig. Wesentlich verbreiteter sind sogenannte 360-Grad-Touren.

Beim 360-Grad-Tourismus gibt es prinzipiell zwei Varianten: 360-Grad-Walkthroughs, wie sie beispielsweise Google Arts and Culture anbietet. Hier startet man an einem beliebigen Punkt einer Sehenswürdigkeit (etwa des Taj Mahal) und kann sich dann nahezu frei im Gelände per Mausklick bewegen. Im Prinzip wie bei Google Street View, nur mit mehr Informationen. Vergleichbare Angebote gibt es inzwischen wie Sand am Meer, eine guter Übersicht bietet 360Tourist.net.

Eine andere Variante sind 360-Grad-Videos. Im Gegensatz zu den Walkthroughs kann man sich hier nicht frei bewegen, sondern schaut im Prinzip nur ein vorgefertigtes Video an. Da das Video allerdings mit einer 360-Grad-Kamera aufgenommen wurde, kann man sich an jeder Stelle des Videos im Raum umschauen. Der Buckingham Palace hat das bereits 2016 vorgemacht:

Virtual Reality-Brillen und 4D-Erlebniswelten

Das virtuelle Reisen ist derweil keine neue Erfindung. Bereits 2014 gab es in einem New Yorker Marriott Hotel einen virtuellen 4D-Teleporter, mit dem Gäste nach Hawaii „reisen“ konnten. In dem „Teleporter“ wurden Gerüche, die Luftfeuchtigkeit und andere Elemente der Insel simuliert, um die auf einer Virtual Reality-Brille basierende optische Illusion zu unterstützen:

Diese Aktion war freilich mit einem unglaublichen Aufwand und hohen Kosten verbunden. Vor allem zum damaligen Zeitpunkt. Zukünftig wäre es aber durchaus vorstellbar, dass es ähnliche „Teleporter“ in einer deutlich kompakteren und vor allem preiswerteren Form geben wird. Gleichzeitig nimmt die Qualität der VR-Brillen von Jahr zu Jahr zu, so dass das virtuelle Reise deutlich realistischer werden wird.

Natürlich kann weder eine VR-Brille noch ein 360-Grad-Video eine echte Reise ersetzen. Aber Szenarien, in denen Virtual Tourism sinnvoll eingesetzt werden kann, gibt es dennoch zuhauf.
