Richard Vincent, CEO of Fundamental VR, emphasized the importance of reaching pre-human competence, where doctors practice on simulated versions before performing procedures. The gesture control system of the Apple Vision Pro is highly praised for its strong performance and wide range of motion due to multiple cameras on the front, enhancing the overall training experience.

In addition to the advanced gesture control system, the video quality of the Apple Vision Pro has been significantly improved, allowing for high-resolution visuals that do not need to be reduced for compatibility. Where Do Spatial and Affective Computing Meet?

Spatial computing has been in the spotlight, with the Apple Vision Pro headset shipping earlier this year. The device extends reality based on its understanding of the user and their environment, enabling natural interaction through hand gestures, eye tracking, and speech.

Today, we share some thoughts about the intersection of spatial computing and affective computing: “computing that relates to, arises from, or deliberately influences emotions”. The goalof affective computing is to create a computing system capable of both perception, recognition, and understanding of human emotions, and the ability to respond intelligently, sensitively, and naturally.

Spatial computing and affective computing therefore share a broader aim: making human-computer interaction more natural, enabled by understanding user context. While both terms have been around for decades (no, really and really!), they’re becoming increasingly relevant given advances in extended reality (XR) and AI technologies. In this week’s newsletter, we’ll consider how affective computing fits into the growing overlap between XR and AI, and offer three takeaways on how to leverage affective computing to improve human-computer interaction.

Where does affective computing fit in the XR <> AI landscape?

To answer this question, we need to look across current affective computing use cases, and examine some themes. These use cases include:

Education

These use cases broadly fall into two categories – adaptive learning systems (e.g., Brainly) and emotionally-responsive educational robots (e.g., RoboKind). The former adjusts content delivery based on the learner’s emotional state, aiming to enhance engagement, motivation, and retention. The latter includes robots that interact with students and can adapt their teaching strategies to fit the emotional needs of each learner.

Healthcare and wellbeing

Emotion-aware health monitoring and therapeutic applications include wearables and mobile apps that monitor emotional states to help track mental health and stress levels (e.g., Affectiva), or provide support/coaching by adapting responses based on the user’s emotional state (e.g., Replika).

Customer service

Emotion detection has been employed in call centers to analyze vocal tones and speech patterns to adapt responses and improve customer satisfaction (e.g., Cogito). Chatbots and virtual assistants are also becoming more emotionally intelligent, offering responses that are both contextually appropriate and empathetically aligned with the user’s feelings (e.g., Live Person).

Entertainment and media

We can infer one step beyond current stream service algorithms, in which content is recommended based on the emotional state inferred from the user’s interactions and choices. There’s also rich literature on affective game computing, where a game adapts to the player’s emotions (e.g., adjusting difficulty or narrative elements to provide a more immersive experience).

Security

Systems can use emotional recognition as an additional layer of security, identifying potential threats based on emotional cues (e.g., Nviso).

Intertwined with AI

A common theme across use cases is the concept of ambiently anticipating and adapting to user needs, using the emotional cues people are already eliciting to tailor a user experience or initiate a response from a computer system. In an affective computing system, emotions become the user interface.

Compare this with a spatial computing system. Today, headsets like Apple Vision Pro allow us to interact with the headset the same way we interact with non-digital objects. For instance, “gaze at something you are interested in” – something we’ve been doing long before computers, now turns into “gaze at the interface element you want to select” in the headset. The user experience is based on the system’s understanding of both the user and their environment. As XR becomes further intertwined with AI, this depth of understanding and intuitiveness is likely to increase.

Ambient, anticipatory, and adaptive

Let’s consider an example of what affective computing might look like in a future where XR and AI have more thoroughly overlapped:

Imagine you’re stressed, working on a big deliverable. Your spatial computing headset (or glasses) can detect that stress, based on your speech, body movement and physiological signals. The device offers the ability to create a customized, relaxing digital cocoon, subtly offering options to instantly adapt lighting, interface layout and audio to help you get your work done.

A defining aspect of this example is that the system ambiently senses the user’s emotional cues. Once “stress” is detected, the system anticipates the user’s need, offering to adapt the user interface (which in this case, is highly immersive, leveraging audio and visuals). Note there is still an opportunity for the user to provide input. Affording user autonomy and the opportunity to provide feedback to the system are key to avoid false inputs and user frustration, especially until the system learns the user’s preferences (assuming the user gives it permission to do so).

There’s also an inherent theme here of multimodality. Multiple modalities coexist in our social environment, and humans can cross-reference between modalities in real time to understand others’ emotional states (e.g., whether speech matches body movements). This concept is similar to multisensory perception and cognition, in which we are integrating stimuli from across different senses (e.g., vision, hearing, touch) to make sense of the world. In the example described above, affective and spatial computing are coming together, powered by AI, to fuse these multimodal signals into an input to which the system responds.

Takeaways

If you’re building experiences in the realm of spatial and affective computing, here are three takeaways to consider:

Focus on accurately recognizing and fusing multimodal emotional cues, to provide responses that are helpful, genuine and unobtrusive: Aim for a user experience that is more intuitive, responsive and personalized than the user’s current digital experiences, approximating non-digital interaction as much as possible. This involves iterative cycles of testing and learning from your customers, and benchmarking value both against existing technologies, as well as non-digital experiences (e.g., if there’s a chatbot element to the experience, gather feedback on how users would compare it to a conversation with a person).
Respect user autonomy: While you do want to aim for building an unobtrusive solution, also remember that you also need to provide the user with control and the opportunity to provide feedback before adapting the user experience. This may become less required over time, if or when the user chooses to share their preferences with the system. However, start by allowing the user to confirm intent and adaptations before they’re implemented.
Promote well-being, for both the user and society: Affective computing use cases, especially when combined with XR, can quickly veer into Black Mirror territory. Stay focused on what value you’re aiming to deliver to the user, and build for user privacy and trust. Leverage ethical design toolkits such as Tarot Cards of Tech or IDEO’s AI Ethics Cards to pressure test your ideas and technology during product development.

Tencent Involved in Apple Vision Pro’s China Launch – Reports

Some of Tencent’s biggest apps will be available on the device

Tencent is reportedly providing the Apple Vision Pro a much-needed bridge to the Chinese market by making some of its most popular apps available on the device.

The Information, which was tipped off by someone “with direct knowledge of the decision”, believes that while the headset’s recent debut in US stores has enjoyed the support of Disney and others in the US, marketing the Apple Vision Pro would have been a struggle without the support of one of China’s leading technology companies.

The Apple Vision Pro is a mixed reality (MR) headset that is designed to extend the usability of ordinary computers by expanding the 2D desktop screens into a 3D computing interface of the world surrounding a user through which they can utilise MR-powered productivity apps.

We already know that Apple is planning to release the Apple Vision Pro later this year, as Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, confirmed to state media at the China Development Forum in Beijing. A news post on one of CCTV’s Weibo accounts records Cook expressing his admiration for the country: “I am very confident in it (China).

“I love China, I love being here, I love the people and the culture. Every time I come here, I am reminded that anything is possible here.”

Breaking into the Chinese Market

Tencent essentially bypasses China’s strict market regulations in a country where Apple is also unable distribute its own video content.

In fact, Apple has not had any media or subscription service in China since 2017 due to government restrictions. In September last year, China even extended its iPhone ban to state-owned companies and local government workers.

Despite this, 90 percent of Apple’s products were still being made in China, although that figure will have changed with a combination of politics and the pandemic pushing production to other countries like India and Vietnam.

The times may well be changing now with evidence that the US technology company is once again hoping to launch Apple Arcade and Fitness+ in China, presumably through another back door.

Even iCloud+ and Apple Music may finally make an entry to the Chinese marketplace as it has grown its related teams. Another of The Information’s sources told the news provider that Apple has been employing Chinese executives from Tencent, Weibo, and Meitu to help find Chinese partners.

Is it worth it?

The Apple Vision Pro is only ever destined to reach a relatively small number of users due to its hefty price tag, and its US launch has received a mixed response with some finding the headset uncomfortable. On the other hand, as of last month, the Apple Vision Pro has topped 1,000 apps in the App Store.

Apple isn’t the only one competing for this space. In January this year, Tencent also formed an AR and VR software agreement with Meta to provide apps and games for its Quest headset.

Meta is planning to bring a significantly cheaper version to Chinese market in Q4 this year that will undercut Apple’s Vision Pro.

While Apple already has an online store in China, this partnership represents a breakthrough for Meta that does not have such an outlet and needed a local partner like Tencent to sell its products.

Apple may well be thinking many versions ahead, however, when it comes to real profit taking with subsequent releases destined to enter a more affordable price range.

Earlier this month, Apple already made the Apple Vision Pro version 1.1 available to the general public.

Whether or not this will turn out to be the first step in a lucrative overseas business strategy, the partnership itself between Apple and Tencent could be crucial going forwards for both companies. Apple has long provided a similar market entry point for Tencent by allowing WeChat to offer mini apps to its iPhone users.

Businesses elsewhere will also be taking note of Tencent as a possible way into an otherwise heavily regulated marketplace.

Could Spatial Computing Help Detect Early Alzheimer’s Symptoms?

University of Cambridge leverage spatial navigation and input to detect early Alzheimer’s symptoms

This week, Cambridge researchers may have discovered an incredibly valuable medical innovation suggesting that VR could detect early Alzheimer’s symptoms in patients.

Research conducted by experts at the University of Cambridge asked volunteers to navigate a spatial/immersive environment, which in turn helps researchers detect impairments in spatial understanding – an early Alzheimer’s warning sign. The research included 100 asymptomatic adults aged 43 to 66.

By leveraging HTC VIVE-brand VR technology, the researchers were able to show how navigation abilities are linked to dementia risk based on genetic and environmental factors.

Dr Richard Oakley, Associate Director of Research and Innovation at the Alzheimer’s Society, added:

Very early symptoms of dementia can be subtle and difficult to detect, but problems with navigation are thought to be some of the first changes in Alzheimer’s disease. This innovative technology is a long way from becoming a diagnostic test, but it does provide more evidence about the role of navigational abilities as an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease.

How can spatial navigation help detect Alzheimer’s?

Moreover, Professor Dennis Chan also said that “the VR navigation test is based on our knowledge of the spatial properties of cells in the brain’s temporal lobe, and the application of cellular neuroscience to clinical populations helps bridge the gap in understanding how disease at the neuronal level can result in the clinical manifestation of disease.”

Dr Oakley explained that “innovative” VR technology is far from becoming a diagnostic test. However, the doctor noted that “it provides more evidence about the role of navigational abilities as an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease.”

Dr Oakley also added:

 More work is needed to develop this technology, but it will be exciting to see how this research may offer a way to spot disease-specific changes early and help people living with dementia in future.

The research team contains a rich number of medical experts who bring wisdom to this VR-based medical research project. The project’s First author, Dr Coco Newton, UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, who carried out the research project while stationed at the University of Cambridge, explained that outcomes detected in a user’s spatial movement and input indicate that this type of navigation behaviour change “might represent the very earliest diagnostic signal in the Alzheimer’s disease continuum – when people move from being unimpaired to showing manifestation of the disease.”

Dr. Newton continued:

We are now taking these findings forward to develop a diagnostic clinical decision support tool for the NHS in the coming years, which is a completely new way of approaching diagnostics and will hopefully help people to get a more timely and accurate diagnosis.

Combining Spatial Computing & IoT Can Unleash Data’s Full Potential

The enterprise has been talking about Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0 for quite sometime now. We have seen transformation accelerate and the adoption of artificial intelligence, connected devices, and even mixed reality speed-up over the last few months. As enterprise digitization continues to be top of mind and data becomes even more critical in this process, we need to look at how all the data created can be better visualized to generate better business outcomes.

The Internet of Things (IoT) allows devices to talk to each other through connected sensors – producing real-time data. Companies had to learn how to process large amounts of data from IoT devices. They quickly transitioned to dashboards on screens to view the data in meaningful ways.

These dashboards are great for displaying charts simplifying high-level data. They’re even mobile-friendly. Visualization is the key to understanding data from IoT devices, but it doesn’t have to be displayed in the same way as it has been centuries: graphs and charts on 2D surfaces. With spatial computing, data can tell a story in three dimensions and help decision-makers make more informed decisions.

Spatial Computing, as I have explained before, is an evolving 3D-centric form of computing that, at its core, uses AI, Computer Vision, XR & a wide range of technologies to blend virtual experiences into the physical world making almost every surface a spatial interface. It combines software, hardware, data/information & connectivity. It enables humans to interact & communicate in new ways with each other & with machines/tech, as well as gives machines/tech the capabilities to navigate & understand our physical environment in new ways. From a business perspective, it will expand computing into everything you can see, touch, and know

A report from BCG and PTC identified augmented reality as a key to realizing IoT’s potential. „85% of respondents manage IoT and AR together, with 77% having dedicated AR budgets.“ Not to mention, „75% expect paybacks from IoT-AR investments in three years or less with 50% already demonstrating the value of using both IoT and AR.“ From smart cities to manufacturing and defense, it’s about unlocking the full potential of IoT, allowing us to walk inside our data and provide more context and information to make better decisions.

In Iron Man, Tony Stark uses J.A.R.V.I.S, a virtual assistant, to help him build his suites and run his business. J.A.R.V.I.S displays data from all the different devices, machines, and Iron Man suites in extended reality. Holographic images of the systems and parts help Stark make decisions. Eventually, J.A.R.V.I.S was uploaded into Vision, a completely new being in a synthetic body.

While IoT data isn’t yet represented and displayed in J.A.R.V.I.S level quality, companies, retailers, and consumers are starting to use extended reality to view and understand data transmitted from the devices around them. People can now make their own E.D.I.T.H. Glasses (the AR glasses Tony Stark gives Peter Parker in Spiderman: Far From Home). Michael Darby, also known as 314Reactor built his own pair of E.D.I.T.H glasses that can take photos (and analyze who’s in them), read the news or weather with text to speech, and has voice control. The glasses even have a lens that’s used on VR headsets for image display. Companies like Magic Leap already offer spatial computing headsets that allow enterprises to visualize complex data.

XR & IoT: A Service Experience

In manufacturing, digital transformation is changing the way companies look at what they’re making. Digital transformation is more than „just building stuff“ or „just selling things.“ It’s about using technology to create a service experience out of every process in manufacturing and the supply chain.

Traditional thinking in manufacturing is that happy customers are loyal customers. With digitization in manufacturing, customers expect more from their buying experience. Now, a great product isn’t enough. It’s the customer experience that turns buyers into loyal customers. „Now the way manufacturing is done, you’re buying an experience. Extended reality visualization of IoT data powers experiences like remote assist. Through AR headsets or AR-enabled devices, operators can learn how to run a machine or fix a broken one with a J.A.R.V.I.S-like format. AR can highlight parts of the device that need to be prepared or the next step to run a machine. Live video stream from a real human can talk an operator through complicated repairs based on the real-time data from the sensors on the machine.

XR and IoT integrated with enterprise software can „digital experiences that empower service teams to better solve problems remotely so work can be completed efficiently and safely.“ That’s what CareAR and ServiceNow worked together to achieve for ServiceNow’s customer service, field service, and IT service management products.

Augmented reality delivers a frictionless approach to integrated workflows. In the CareAR use case, augmented reality lets customer service representatives and technicians see problems, visually guide the solution, and capture the solution so that it was available for other teams.

This scenario not only saves time and increases customer service, but it also is a great way of overcoming tribal knowledge. Visually capturing processes and workflows with digital instructions in real-time is a great way of capturing the „real“ way things work in an organization.

Chris Kibbee, chief delivery officer at NTT DATA Services, says that augmented solutions help teams deliver faster and are aligned with the customer experience. „Capabilities such as AR, AI, and integrated digital workflows are transformative to enabling greater operational efficiencies and enhancing customer experiences.“

BadVR is one such example of a company using spatial computing and data visualization to give customers a whole new perspective on their data.

BadVR’s technique makes it so anyone can get value from their data, even without special training. Dashboards do represent more data, but for inexperienced users, they can lead to analysis paralysis. BadVR uses AR and VR „to create a single, holistic, multi-dimensional „data experience“ that’s created from the user’s datasets.“ For the enterprise, that means data is accessible to more people. „Immersion — when applied properly — allows users of all technical skill levels to ingest huge amounts of complex data without increasing their cognitive load.“

Another example of immersive data visualization is from a company called Flow Immersive. Flow Immersive is using spatial computing to help visualize and track data on Covid-19 cases across the globe.

Flow’s data tools were used by the World Bank to visualize their data „to see global progress and where growth in electricity access is needed the most to provide universal access.“ The visualization uses voice, along with 3D graphics to show users the electrical access of the world in a natural way.

Beyond Just Visualization

One of the great things about extended reality is that it is more than just visualization. Visualization is important to humans who are 90% visual. That doesn’t mean we should abandon our other senses, especially as it comes to understanding and reacting to data.

Headsets and eyeglasses don’t work for every situation. Fortunately, there are ways to interact with data from IoT devices without eyesight. In manufacturing, cameras don’t always catch that a machine is still running, putting operators in danger of injury. In one plant, an operator was killed by a machine because the camera failed to notice that it was still in motion.

After the tragic event, the plant „installed sensors on the equipment that notify operators of its status based on the sound of the equipment. The sensors can detect if the equipment is running more finitely than a person or camera.“ Operators equipped with haptic feedback wearables like a watch or glove could be notified from the equipment with buzzes to their wrist. Different haptic touches could represent different machines on the floor.

The IoT Enabled Consumer

Connected devices are everywhere, not just manufacturing plants. A 2019 forecast from the IDC „estimates that there will be 41.6 billion connected IoT devices, or „things,“ generating 79.4 zettabytes (ZB) of data in 2025.“ Decreasing camera costs and higher bandwidth options make homes the next hotbed of connected devices from internet-enabled security systems, to washing machines, and smart fridges. All that data can quickly become overwhelming, especially as push notifications through smartphones or tablets.

Just like how extended reality creates an experience out of data in the plant, so too can it for consumers. The problem is, consumers don’t understand what the Internet of Things is. Vodafone, a mobile and broadband provider, is stepping into consumer IoT. Pamela Brown, former chief marketing officer at Vodafone Smart Tech says while consumers might not understand IoT they „do know what smart tech is… The category is more embedded in consumers‘ mindsets, especially with the explosion of smart speakers.“ For consumers, the ease and convenience of connected devices balanced with concerns for security and privacy will create the digitized world.

Imagine it’s cleaning day. The dishwasher needs to be loaded, the washing machine is running, and the fridge needs to be restocked. First, you vocally tell the fridge it needs to be restocked. It starts analyzing its contents compared to your normal shopping list. The fridge talks to the pantry to see if there are any meals that can be made, and if not, adds ingredients to the list.

While the fridge is running, you start loading the dishwasher. Using AR glasses, you scan the countertops and kitchen table. The AR interface highlights one pot, two dishes, and a mug that missed getting loaded. As you go to rinse off the dishes and load them, the AR interface highlights the mug. It’s not dishwasher safe.

As you finish up the dishwasher, your smartwatch buzzes three times, indicating the washing machine ended a while ago and still has wet clothes in it. After taking care of the laundry, the smart doorbell rings. Your security system analyzes who rang the doorbell and notifies you it was a delivery person who dropped off two boxes.

You head back to the fridge. The AR glasses display three meals that can be made, highlighting the ingredients in the pantry and fridge that correspond to each meal. You click a virtual button to accept the meal, verify the shopping list, and click „shop“. Chores are done.

A Future Where Data, Machines, & Humans Meet

According to an industry report from PTC, 86% of enterprises expect their AR pilots to go live in the next 12 months. Companies realize that augmented reality and IoT can empower employees in design, manufacturing, marketing and sales, service, and more. Companies are doing this by creating AR compatible ecosystems.

REFLEKT, an operating system for enterprise AR says, that with AR, „information will be digitally attached to the physical world, waiting for us to access and use it to further develop our goals and ambitions without ever having to turn our attention away from what it is we wish to do.“ Extended reality is more than a nice feature. It’s critical for the future of production, visualization, and experience of IoT data.

Combining IoT & Spatial Computing Can Take Data Visualization & Analytics To New Frontiers

The Internet of Things, unleashed with spatial computing and 5G/6G will create endless possibilities for the enterprise and consumers. 5G/6G offers low latency, dense coverage that combined with higher bandwidths, will be able to unveil previously unreachable places.

What is spatial computing? And how will businesses use it?

Tony Stark got it. Apple gets it, too. “Spatial computing” is coming. Here’s what you need to know.

The term “artificial intelligence” is likely to have stiff competition this year when it comes to being the buzziest phrase in tech. That’s because Apple is expected to launch its Vision Pro mixed reality headset, and simultaneously, Apple hopes, bring the words “spatial computing” into the mainstream.

Here’s what you need to know about this new frontier in tech and how businesses may use it.

What is spatial computing?

The concept of “spatial computing” is widely attributed to researcher Simon Greenwold, who coined the term in a 2003 paper. Greenwold defines spatial computing as the “human interaction with a machine in which the machine retains and manipulates referents to real objects and spaces.”

A simplified way of saying this is that spatial computing melds a computer system’s user interface with the real world. Using a spatial computer—usually in the form of goggles—the wearer can still see the real world around them, but they can also see other elements overlayed on top of this real-world environment and interact with those elements in the physical space using their bodies, typically hands.

How is spatial computing different than AR and VR?

In VR, you are completely immersed in a virtual world and can see none of the real world around you. A VR device doesn’t know a couch is in front of you and doesn’t care. VR is ideal for things like video games. Sony has a dedicated VR gaming device called the PS VR, which is a great example of a consumer virtual reality device.

Augmented reality (AR), on the other hand, displays virtual elements on top of the real world. Whether you know it or not, you almost certainly already own an AR device: your smartphone. Tons of apps take advantage of AR technology to let you see data layered atop the real world through your smartphone’s screen and camera. These apps include navigation apps that display virtual arrows on your screen, so you know where to make the next left, or gaming apps like Pokémon Go, which let you hunt and find digital Pokémon in the real world. AR apps know more about where you are in relation to the real world than VR devices do because they utilize other tech in your smartphone like GPS and rear cameras.

Still, with AR, you are forced to interact with those digital overlays via your smartphone’s screen. Though you can see the virtual Pokémon on your screen, if you reach out to where it looks to be situated in the real world, you wouldn’t be able to manipulate it in the physical space before you.

And that’s where AR and spatial computing really differ. In spatial computing, you can interact with those virtual objects by simply using your hands in the physical space in front of you. Thus the “space” in “spatial computing” refers to the ability to act with virtual objects as if they were actually physically present in the real world. What’s really cool about advanced spatial computers is that the virtual elements displayed can also drape virtual shadows across the contours of real-world objects to give the virtual ones a sense of depth and physical presence.

A great fictional example of spatial computing is that scene in the first Iron Man movie where Tony Stark is using his bare hands to manipulate the design of a virtual Iron Man suit before him. Of course, spatial computing that advanced is still a ways off as all our current spatial computers require goggles.

What are some current examples of spatial computers?

The best example of a spatial computer is the Apple Vision Pro, which Apple previewed last June and indicated it will release in the early part of this year. The Vision Pro is a headset that you wear that projects virtual elements into the world around you. You can interact with those elements by just using your hands, eyes, or voice—no tapping on a screen or mouse needed.

But Apple won’t be able to lay claim to having released the world’s first consumer spatial computer. Plenty of other companies have spatial computers on the market, including Microsoft with its HoloLens 2 and Meta with its Quest Pro.

How does spatial computing work?

Spatial computers can do so much more than augmented reality devices can because they are packed with more sensors, cameras, and other input technology that can detect and read the world around you in real time. For example, Apple’s Vision Pro has 12 cameras and five sensors that help the device know everything from the level of light in a physical space to where objects are in relation to each other, to where your eyes are looking, and how your hands move.

The sheer number of cameras, sensors, and other advanced tech contained in the Vision Pro is one of the main reasons the device costs an eye-watering $3,499. Less advanced spatial computers like the Meta Quest Pro cost $999.

How can spatial computing be used in the workplace?

Consumer uses for spatial computing include everything from video gaming to media watching. A spatial computer like the Apple Vision Pro can make it feel like you have an IMAX-size screen in your living room. But what about businesses? The use cases there are a bit more niche, but no less promising.

One of the most obvious examples of how a spatial computer can benefit office workers is by giving them an unlimited number of virtual displays to view all their open documents side by side. Goodbye, tabs! A single spatial computer headset can eliminate the need for multiple physical displays, so if you are working with multiple spreadsheets, PowerPoints, or photos, you can project a dozen of these kinds of documents in the space in front of you, move them around, and adjust them to appear as large or as small as you like.

Design and engineering are fields particularly ripe to benefit from spatial computing. Designers and engineers already use advanced 3D modeling programs to conceptualize their products. Now, with spatial computers, those 3D models can move from the flat 2D monitor to the real world around them. For example, an automotive designer can walk around the virtual version of her concept car right in her own garage, seeing if the car’s slopes and angles look as appealing in real life as they do in her CAD drawings. Or an action figure designer can test out different-size prototypes of the hero to see how the figure works with existing vehicles in the toy line without having to actually manufacture any.

When it comes to setting up an office or workspace, a spatial computer can save a company from having to manually move objects like desks, couches, chairs, or machinery unnecessarily, thus saving time and expense. If the business can render digital twins of all the components that they want in their workspace, they can simply arrange and rearrange the virtual twins in the physical space first, and with the spatial computer goggles on their faces, they can walk around the empty space to make sure that everything fits right and people can still move around easily. The same advantages apply to retail stores that want to test out new merchandising layouts.

Spatial computing can also help businesses train new employees. A car repair shop could use a spatial computer to guide a new hires through replacing their first carburetor. It could display arrows pointing to which bolts the new worker needs to undo in what order, leaving the manager to attend to other things.

And let’s not forget the communication benefits of spatial computing. The technology can bring video conferencing into the 21st century by freeing long-distance communication from a flat computer screen. Using spatial computing, the people you are video conferencing with could appear as if they are sitting across the desk from you, or huddled around the whiteboard with you, leading to a more natural, interactive experience than traditional video calls provide.

In short, spatial computing does truly open up a new frontier in the computing space for consumers and businesses. With the upcoming launch of the Apple Vision Pro, expect to hear the term a lot more in 2024.

Augmented reality (AR) technology allows digital images to be imposed over the real world. Apple‘s Vision Pro virtual reality headset, set for release on Feb. 2, also allows users to see the real world using what the company calls „spatial computing“ technology.

Rokid sells AR glasses for consumers. But its deal with Hefei will focus on using AR for factories, Rokid founder and CEO Misa Zhu told CNBC in a phone interview Wednesday.

AR glasses can help with equipment safety checks, while reducing the time workers need to spend on training, he said, claiming Rokid already has more than 60% market share in industries such as energy in China.

Zhu said that since businesses care more about the product’s capabilities than the price, it allows Rokid to test new AR technology with industrial customers before finding ways to lower its cost and roll it out to consumers.

AI Is A Critical Building Block For Spatial Computing

We are at the cusp of a new computing paradigm. It’s called spatial computing. Spatial computing is when physical and virtual objects converge seamlessly and it’s made possible with artificial intelligence. This has profound implications for how we interact with technology and with each other. Spatial computing opens up endless possibilities for creativity, innovation, human connectivity, and new ways to work. It removes barriers, closes distances, and enables co-presence. Spatial Computing will make the devices we use and how we use them blend into the daily natural flow and patterns of how we live our lives.

To appreciate the business value of Spatial Computing, we first have to create a working definition for the business world and explain the market opportunities it will enable. Once we unlock that, we can understand how business and computing will change in order to prepare for this transformation.

As I wrote in the Harvard Business Review, “Spatial computing is an evolving form of computing that blends our physical world and virtual experiences using a wide range of technologies, thus enabling humans to interact and communicate in new ways with each other and with machines, as well as giving machines the capabilities to navigate and understand our physical environment in new ways. From a business perspective… it will expand computing into everything you can see, touch, and know.”

Spatial Computing is an evolving 3D-centric form of computing that, at its core, uses AI, Computer Vision, and extended reality to blend virtual experiences into the physical world that breaks free from screens and makes all surfaces spatial interfaces. It allows humans, devices, computers, robots, and virtual beings to navigate via computing in 3D space. It ushers in a new paradigm for human-to-human interaction as well as human-computer interaction. These new interactions will enhance how we visualize, simulate, and interact with data in physical or virtual locations. It will expand computing beyond the confines of the screen into everything you can see, experience, and know.

Spatial Computing allows us to navigate the world alongside robots, drones, cars, virtual assistants, and beyond. It’s not limited to just one technology or device. It is a mix of software, hardware, and information that allows humans and technology to connect in new ways ushering in a new form of computing that could be even more impactful than personal computing and mobile computing have been to society.

Spatial computing brings digital information and experiences into a physical environment. It takes into account the position, orientation, and context of the wearer, as well as the objects and surfaces around it. It uses a new, advanced type of computing to understand the physical world in relation to virtual environments and the wearer. It does this by using emerging interfaces like wearable headsets that have cameras, scanners, microphones, and other sensors built into the device. New interfaces come in the form of shopping to work and play. The world around us will talk to us in new ways via spatial computing. Spatial computing enables advanced gestural recognition (like recognizing our hand motions and applying them as commands) and it will have better-than-4K resolution images for each eye.

Spatial computing uses information about the environment around it to act in a way that’s most intuitive for the person using it. How businesses digitally transform using spatial computing will set them apart from the competition and set them up for success for generations who grow up in an increasingly blended virtual and physical world.

Spatial Computing Is Not Just About AR And VR

To many, spatial computing may not seem different from virtual reality or augmented reality. Augmented reality is overlaying digital content into a physical space. Virtual reality is a completely immersive virtual environment. The extended reality (XR) spectrum is part of spatial computing, but it’s not its only enabling technology. Artificial intelligence is on everyone’s mind, along with XR, sensors, IoT, and new levels of connectivity. AI is one of the most important underlying technologies that will bring spatial computing to the masses.

Spatial computing is a mix of hardware and software that enables machines to understand our physical environment without us telling it so. That enables us to create content, products, and services that have a purpose in both physical and virtual environments.

The future of spatial computing is poised for substantial growth, driven by key advancements. These include radical progress in optics, the miniaturization of sensors and chips, the ability to authentically portray 3D images, and the continuous evolution of spatial computing hardware and software. These innovations, supported by significant breakthroughs in AI, will make spatial computing increasingly compelling for businesses on a grand scale in the years to come.

AI’s Critical Role In Spatial Computing

Artificial intelligence has a critical role in spatial computing. There are applications personal to the wearer and objects in the spatial environment. We won’t type to AI. We’ll talk to it. AI capabilities like large language models (LLMs) and deep neural networks (DNNs) allow people to act and think like humans as they interact with computers (instead of thinking like a database). Amazon’s Alexa Smart glasses say it all: let “voice control your world – hands-free.” AI’s critical role in spatial computing will force business professionals to start thinking about spatial computing in the context of today’s AI revolution.

Here are some of the ways AI is a critical building block for spatial computing.

AI recognizes our hand gestures and body language.

AI algorithms, like computer vision models, improve the accuracy and speed of object recognition and tracking. This is crucial for understanding our hand gestures to interact with the digital environment. AI can also identify and track objects and surfaces, which makes spatial computing experiences seamless and interactive. Spatial computing uses cameras, LiDAR, GPS, and sensors to capture the position, orientation, and movement of objects in an environment. Spatial computing allows us to place and manipulate virtual objects in ways that correspond to the virtual world.

Object and scene generation.

People will use spatial computing and AI together to generate content for digital spaces. Just like content creators today use their cell phones to create online content, so too will they use their wearable spatial devices to create 3D content. From games to spatial video and audio, creators will use AI to develop personalized scenes, objects, and entertainment for their fans.

Conversational navigation.

Human beings are social animals. We thrive around other humans. While some argue that no one would wear a device on their faces, similarly, many doubted we would ever use the internet or mobile phones. Spatial computing will solve communication challenges as simple as where to find a product at your favorite store or share your child’s birthday party with relatives far away. There is a sense of volumetric presence. It’s more than the sense of someone being there on a video call. It’s as if they’re sitting next to you. A 3D hologram you could reach out and touch,

Spatial computing will also serve as the medium to engage with AI.

AI takes data and generates new data. For DeepMind and Inflection AI founder Mustafa Suleyman, the next phase of artificial intelligence will be interactive AI. That begs the question of how and where we will engage with this interactive AI. That’s where spatial computing comes in. Spatial computing has become the medium through which we engage with AI in a more human way. We will navigate the future of computing most of the time either through gestural recognition (which uses AI) or through conversational AI. While we might still type on virtual keyboards, it might not be convenient for simple day-to-day tasks.

Some foreshadowing of this change was seen during Apple’s Apple Event, where the new iPhone 15 and new Apple Watch were unveiled. Apple is conditioning the market to use neural interfaces to engage with technology through a natural double-tap motion on the Apple Watch.

This was a big step for Amazon as well. They recently announced their new Alexa LLM and Echo frames rooted in style and in a more robust conversational AI interface. Amazon pushes the hands-free narrative by talking to Alexa to make calls, play an audiobook, or playlist. Talk to your Amazon glasses to check that the doors are locked, lights are set, and even adjust the thermostat with your voice.
