Masterpiece X Promises VR Generative AI 3D Creation Platform On Quest 2

Masterpiece X will use generative AI for a new „game-ready“ 3D creation platform available on Quest 2 in early access.

Masterpiece Studio is launching Masterpiece X to develop „game-ready 3D“ with a mesh alongside textures and animation. Pitched as compatible with Unity engine and „other popular apps,“ the store page stresses this platform is not for developers who want „to start from scratch“.

Calling Masterpiece X a „3D remixing platform,“ you can start remixing existing models from a ‚Community Library‘ to change their shape, style or how it moves, though importing or generating models isn’t available just yet. Once done, you can then edit your 3D model and share with Masterpiece X’s wider community.

The app is described as „exclusively“ for the Quest platform. It’s still in „early access“ with a waitlist for the generative AI features. Masterpiece X is available now for free on Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro.

„Although we haven’t released details about the ’secret sauce‘ of how we train our AI, what we can say is that our machine learning is done in a socially and legally responsible way,“ a support page for the app explains. „None of our existing AI has been trained off of copyrighted 3D models.“

Paint Fiesta Looks Like Microsoft Paint In Mixed Reality

Paint Fiesta looks like mixed reality Microsoft Paint, turning your living room into a canvas on Quest 2.

Described by developer Mike Festa as inspired by MS Paint, Paint Fiesta launched earlier this month on Quest 2 via App Lab with hand-tracking support. Available for free „for a limited time,“ Festa is launching a Kickstarter campaign on May 31 to expand this into a full release later this year. Detailed in an email to UploadVR, that includes plans for local multiplayer using shared spatial anchors, remote multiplayer, water balloons filled with paint, paintball guns and more.

„I was inspired to make this game by the fond memories that I have of creating digital content at a young age. It felt like magic to be able to paint on my TV and clean it all up with the click of a button,“ Festa tells UploadVR in an email.

Reality is your canvas! Paint on your walls, as seen through the passthrough camera, using just your hands. Let your imagination come to life as you experience the future of immersive digital content creation. This app is under active development and your input can help shape its direction!

While Paint Fiesta is available now, keep in mind that Kickstarter is not a preorder system, delays are common and there’s no guarantee you’ll get the features that you pledged toward.

Paint Fiesta is available now on Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro. It’s also planned for release on PC VR via Steam and the developer wants to bring it to the App Store „when Apple’s headset is ready.“

VR experience (Hi)Story of a Painting - The Light in the Shadow

(Hi)Story of a Painting: The Light in the Shadow follows the first VR experience in the series, (Hi)Story of a Painting: What’s the Point?, which debuted at the 2021 SXSW. The first episode is available on Meta Quest for free.

(Hi)Story of a Painting: The Light in the Shadow VR experience is currently one of the main attractions at the Burghley House in Lincolnshire until August 31. It has world premiered to wide acclaim, having won the Special Jury Recognition for Immersive Storytelling at the SXSW 2022.

It will debut at the Venice Film Festival, as part of the “Best of Venice Immersive” selection, and will be part of the festival’s public experience from September 1 to September 6.

The Team Behind ‘(Hi)Story of a Painting: The Light in the Shadow’ VR Experience

This compelling narrative showcasing the life of Artemisia Gentileschi was created by a team of co-directors Quentin Darras and Gaëlle Mourre. Darras has been working in the 2D and 3D animation industry for over a decade, producing works for movies, games, and international campaigns for Nintendo, as well as immersive commercial projects for Honda and Octonauts.

Mourre is an immersive film writer and director. She is an alumna of several international film festivals, including Sundance, SXSW, and Venice Production Bridge. She has worked on several award-winning short films, including Awakening and The Feast. Mourre is also a 2022 Berlinale Talent.

The VR experience is produced by Mourre and award-winning filmmaker Charlotte Mikkelborg. It is set to original music composed by British-Malaysian artist and composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman.

Vermillion Available On Oculus Store For Rift, Cross-Buy With Future Quest Release

The VR oil painting simulator app Vermillion is now available on the Oculus Store for Rift, after releasing last month on Steam.

The Oculus Store release will offer cross-buy with the Oculus Quest release, which is in development and will release in 2022. This means those who buy the app on the Oculus Store for Rift will receive a copy of the app on Quest for free, once available. Users who own a VR-ready PC and an Oculus Quest can use Oculus Link or AirLink to play the title on the Quest until the native standalone version of the game arrives next year.

We spoke with Vermillion developer Thomas van den Berge in our virtual studio space earlier this week, discussing Vermillion’s history and development process. Van den Berge, who is the sole developer, said that the Quest port is his current focus. “That’s the big priority right now, just to make it accessible to as many people as possible because so many people only have the Quest or just prefer being untethered. It’s going to be a big one.”

“I already have a first version running on the Quest, which has pretty much full feature parity,” said van den Berge. “But it’s not yet running at full framerate. So I’ll have to be looking at how much I can optimize. And otherwise, what features do I have to scale down to get it running properly on the Quest? I’m aiming at full feature parity, hopefully it’ll work out.”

Van den Berge confirmed that Vermillion will arrive on App Lab for Quest first, before launching on the Oculus Store for Quest at a later date. We’ve reached out to confirm whether cross-buy support will include the Quest App Lab release,or just the Oculus Store for Quest release, and will update the article if we receive a response.

Vermillion Brings Realistic Oil Painting To VR

A new application called Vermillion aims to bring oil painting to VR, with realistic painting mechanics and web browser integration.

There’s a few key features that are really interesting for Vermillion and position it as a realistic oil painting sim for VR. First of all, it has traditional analog color mixing, which basically just means you can take different pigments and mix them together on your palette to find the ideal tone.

It also has an integrated web browser that can stand next to your easel while you paint. This allows you to pull up painting tutorials, like those by the famous Bob Ross, and paint along to with ease. It’s a great feature that has a very Infinite Office feel to it.

The other big feature is Vermillion’s ability to simulate wet-on-wet paint, essentially allowing you to move colors around and blur strokes after you’ve painted them onto the canvas, just like real life. You can also use pressure to change the thickness and application of your strokes as well, just as you would with real painting.

While I’m not a painter myself, all in all this looks like a pretty solid representation and translation of oil painting in VR.

Vermillion isn’t the only painting and art-focused app we’ve seen pop up lately. Painting VR, available on App Lab for Quest, is similar in premise but a bit more focused on providing a sandbox environment for you to muck around in.
